Tomorrow begins a new chapter for the Big East, but don’t expect much change. Heck, the new commish said he isn’t even changing offices.

Today is Mike Tranghese’s final day as the league’s commissioner and senior associate commissioner John Marinatto officially takes over Wednesday. Tranghese has been commissioner since 1990 and Marinatto has been senior associate commissioner since 2002. Marinatto, like Tranghese, is very unassuming and the league should continue to prosper under his direction.

Both Tranghese and Marinatto provided interesting first-person columns for Sporting News Today.

Also, here’s part of a Q/A I did for The Tampa Tribune with Tranghese last year in which he discussed his reason for retiring and whether he believes the league will add a ninth-football member (Sorry UCF, Memphis, East Carolina, etc., etc.).

Q. What played into your decision to retire?
A. My fear of flying. It’s really gotten bad, especially in the small planes. I’ve got claustrophobia. Flying on regional jets is not something I want to do. You can’t get around unless you fly regional jets nowadays.

Q. What will you miss the most?
A. I’ll miss the games. I’ve got a lot of relations, I’ll miss the people, but I love the games. It’s still the best part of the job.

Q. Do you want a ninth-football member?
A. I just don’t think there’s anybody out there that makes us better. If there was somebody out there who could make us better, I think our people would react to it very quickly. We talk about it all the time. I don’t think there’s anyone there that makes us better.

Q. Are you surprised how fast USF has made an impact since joining the league?
A. Not really. I talked to people who I really respect in football - I’m not going to tell you who but big-time football people - they all told me this is what’s going to happen. I think anyone knows that investigated the South Florida situation, understands the potential because of its geographic location and the fact they’re surrounded by so many talented football players.

USF signs Griffin: Rend Lake (Ill.) College’s David Griffin, who was medalist at the National Junior College championship in May, signed with USF.

“We are thrilled to have David join our golf program here at USF,” USF coach Jim Fee said. “He is a great golfer and a tremendous student. We wanted to bring in a player that has a track record of winning and he has that having won three junior college tournaments in the spring. He has also proven that he has what it takes to be a national champion.”

Keifer adds eight: Eight newcomers have joined the men’s soccer team.

“We are extremely happy with the student-athletes that we have added this year,” Coach George Kiefer said. “We are looking forward to working with these guys throughout the course of their careers. We are fortunate to have recruited a class full of players who are great athletes and tremendous people.”

Kiefer’s club also has earned a No. 13 preseason national ranking from College Soccer News. USF is one of five Big East teams in the Top 30.

Also, the women’s soccer team’s schedule recently was released. The Bulls will face six NCAA Tournaments from last season.
