Detroit’s version of the Cover 2 may be about to take on even more of a Buccaneer complexion.
Tampa Bay released veteran linebacker Ryan Nece Saturday and the Lions are quite familiar with Nece’s attributes. The Lions, who allowed the most yards in the league in 2007, already feature ex-Bucs Brian Kelly, Dewayne White, Dwight Smith, Chuck Darby and Kalvin Pearson on Joe Barry’s defense.
Barry and Lions head coach Rod Marinelli were Buc assistants on Monte Kiffin’s staff when Nece entered the league with Tampa Bay in 2002.
“I was fortunate to be there on Day 1 when Ryan walked through the door in Tampa as an undrafted free agent,’’ Barry said. “He was the ninth or 10th linebacker on the roster, an extra body to get us through camp. But I kept noticing Ryan’s keen knowledge of the game, especially for a rookie. He just had a savvy about him. He continued to impress us and he ended up making the team. We were the No. 1 ranked defense in the NFL that season, so he had to be good just to stick with us.’‘
Nece , 29, is the son of Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott. He was very involved in charitable efforts during his six season with the Bucs, forming the Ryan Nece Foundation in 2006.
“Ryan just kept getting better,’’ Barry said. “He worked hard in the weight room and changed his body. Then he had a bunch of hurdles to overcome. He started for us in 2003—then we had a chance to sign Ian Gold, so Ryan was demoted. He doesn’t say a word and after Gold leaves, Ryan starts for us in 2005 and 2006. Then the Bucs brought in Cato June for his spot at strong-side linebacker and Ryan is demoted again. I can’t say enough about Ryan Nece the football player and Ryan Nece the man.’‘

As one Lions fan put it, it’s the Tampa Too.

As a Bucs fan, I rooted for Ryan for a long time. Just because he’s no longer a Buc, I hope to see him land a good job doing what he knows best. Thanks for all you’ve done as a player and as a great person. Best wishes for a great future.

Sims gave a spleen for this town. I bet he will be starting for a team by the time this season is over. The Jets may pick him up to replace Favre when he gets hurt and has to retire. Again.
