Hey folks, I’m getting ready to drive up to Tallahassee this morning to pick up a few more things as I continue the relocation process. But I’ll be back on the blog later this evening to give you guys some choices on the blog name.
Also, Gregg Becnel will be out at practice this afternoon and will provide a full report on the blog. I’ll also be working on my USF beat column once I get to Tally with some men’s basketball discussion and more B.J. Daniels talk. How he plays down the stretch will largely determine how the Bulls finish. That’s a lot to ask of a freshman quarterback, but Daniels has the tools to make it a success as we saw Friday night.
As naming the blog, some of the suggestions were strong, and once we pick a name, we’ll create a brand logo and go from there. And of course, the winner gets lunch on me and I may even toss in that old Tribune t-shirt as a free bonus gift.
So, have a good day and if anyone wants to buy a house in Tally, please let me know

Scott,
Since basketball season is here and we’re of course talking an awful lot about BJ Daniels, what can we expect from him in terms of USF basketball for the upcoming season? Does he plan on joining the team after the football season? How does Leavitt feel about his starting quarterback playing on the basketball team?
As a fan I assumed that after Grothe left and Daniels became the starter, his basketball career at USF would sort of just fade away. What’s going to happen?
Another good question for the story would be Stan Heath’s take on the matter.

As a name for the blog, how about the “Bull Horn”?

Judging from last night, it is hard to see how he would get anything but charity playing time (unless, of course, there are a spate of injuries again).

I think playing for both teams was an option that USF offered and Daniels took last year, but I recall in last week’s post-game interview, Coach Leavitt made a statement along the lines of Daniels not getting basketball time until December/ after bowl season. Don’t wanna put words in the coach’s mouth, though, but I can’t see Daniels being starting QB and trying to play basketball all in the same week this year.

BullMartin:
Thanks for reading. You make a good point on Daniels. From what I’m told, he’ll be focusing on football until the bowl game, and after that will talk more about his basketball future. With USF’s improved depth in basketball, unlikely Daniels would see a lot of playing time and Stan Heath understands his future is in football. So don’t be surprised if his basketball career sort of fades away like you mention.

The issue with basketball for BJD is that being able to play hoops along with FB was what he negotiated—and he excluded schools from consideration that weren’t willing to extend that option or that didn’t have a BB team where that was a possibility. Surely BB practice starting in mid-December is great for keeping in shape, and perhaps good for his ego, but that’s about all. I can’t imagine him getting any BB playing time this year or hereafter (barring a lot of unfortunate injuries) and it sure isn’t going to do his QBing any good to be playing BB rather than doing whatever QBs need to do in the off-season.
