Because of Sunday and Monday games, the Associated Press ballots weren’t due until Tuesday. So the new AP Poll should be released Tuesday afternoon. Here’s how I voted.
After my rankings each week, I’ll list a couple of quick thoughts on why I may have moved some teams up or down. You can also stalk me - or at least keep track of how I vote at PollSpeak.com. If you have any questions (without going through all 25 teams), let me know.
This week Team Last week
1. Georgia 1
2. Ohio State 2
3. USC 3
4. Florida 6
5. Missouri 7
6. Oklahoma 8
7. LSU 9
8. West Virginia 4
9. Auburn 10
10. Texas 11
11. Texas Tech 12
12. Penn State 13
13. Alabama NR
14. South Florida 16
15. Arizona State 18
16. BYU 19
17. Kansas 20
18. Oregon 21
19. Wisconsin 23
20. Wake Forest 24
21. South Carolina 25
22. East Carolina NR
23. Clemson 5
24. Utah NR
25. Illinois 17
Almost in: Fresno State, UCLA
See you later: Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Tennessee
Before you ask about the Bulls: I moved them up two spots. This had more to do with teams losing that were ahead of them then what they did against Tennessee Martin. It was an impressive victory, but it was only a I-AA team. I can’t predict the future (unfortunately), but if the Bulls beat UCF I would likely rank them the same next week (as long as no one ranked higher doesn’t lose or someone behind them pulls off a big upset). Obviously, USF’s big movement in the poll will come after the Kansas game, win or lose.
Quick thoughts: The biggest mover for me this week was Alabama, which absolutely dominated what’s supposed to be a very good Clemson squad. I didn’t have the Tide ranked in the preseason (they would have been 26-27), but I’ve got ‘em at 13 this week. ... West Virginia may have scored 48 on Villanova, but the Mountaineers allowed 399 yards to Villanova (even without Ed Pinckney and Rollie Massimino) and were outgained by the Wildcats. That’s why I dropped them from four to eight. If they run the table, they can move back up, but the seven I have in front of them just look better right now (and yes, it’s only one game). ... Illinois gained a ton of yards against Missouri and allowed a kickoff return and interception return for a TD and only lost by 10. That’s why the Illini remain in my Top 25.

I agree. USC’s performance against Virginia was impressive. UVA is definitely down this year but they are still a BCS program and USC had to travel across the nation to play them. They absolutely dominated them. That was the most impressive performance of the weekend.

Seems fair
I think USC is the best team in the country though.

Excellent analysis Brett. I wish all the voters looked at games this closely and voted accordingly. You actually watched games and didn’t just look at final scores.

Brett,
when are the polls going to be released.

Nabeel, Oregon could jump USF. They thumped Washington - but a very bad Washington team - and some voters may remember Sun Bowl game last year. Again, though, USF’s big chance to make a move will be in two weeks vs. KU

Overall your rankings look pretty good to me. I think that Oregon and Alabama will jump USF this week, but Tennessee & Virginia Tech will fall below USF. I think Clemson slides in at No. 19, pushing USF back to 20. Hmmmmm...that would get me my bonus points in the picks contest…

Brian, Alabama plays at Georgia at the end of the month so we’ll see if they’re for real. But Bama’s total domination was, I thought, the most impressive win of the week.

Brett,
I wouldn’t have moved Alabama up so far yet. As you said, Clemson is supposed to be the class of the ACC, but I for one am beginning to doubt that.
I wouldn’t given them credit for beating the #9 team in the nation. I would assume Clemson will be closer to 7-5 then 12-1 after that performance.
Though, it’s not that important at this point. It will iron out in the future. I appreciate you posting your ballot and explanation, Brett.
Thanks,
Brian

I agree Allen. I think early on teams should move quite a bit based on performance and outcomes. Alabama had the best win (at least according to preseason polls) so they should jump considerably. Nice job Brett. I like the logic.

I agree with moving WVU down the ladder. I don’t care what the talking heads say about Pat White’s passing game - they let ‘Nova sore 21 points on them!

I like that your have a rather fluid ballot. As much as I hate Alabama, I would have ranked them ahead of USF and most of those other schools, too. I like that WVU’s bad performance dropped them. I think all ballots should be very fluid, especially early on.
Unfortunately for USF, it’s almost guaranteed that Alabama will be ahead in the polls. Hopefully, like this example, Clemson plummets like they should and we end up 17th in the AP.
Moving up 2 spots is pretty good for week 1. We should move up 3 spots in the Coach’s Poll since Illinois is above us, but I don’t expect them to drop Clemson as much. We’ll probably end up 19th.
But hey, here’s hoping for 16 and 17, respectively.

Terry, with USC, they play Ohio State, so they’ll have a chance to get up to No. 2 or No. 1 with a win. And Bama/Saban vs. USF/academics had nothing to do with where I put Bama. But simply destroyed the ACC favorites (now if Clemson finishes 7-5 that win won’t be that impressive). USF did what it was supposed to do against I-AA fodder. UCF may be reigning C-DOA champs, but the Knights are still two TD underdogs, so it’s a game USF is expected to win. That could become a problem down the line for USF if it is favored in every game - there will be no “shock” factor by pulling off an upset. Also the way the Big East looks so far, some might suggest USF is doing well in a bad league - and at least after Week 1, they would be right.

I would’ve flip flopped USC and OSU… also, ‘Bama dominated… but I think you like the shock factor out of USF fans moving ‘Bama above us Brett (Saban is a tool for screaming academic inequalities exist at USF).
I haven’t seen USF dominate a game like that in a long time. No way would I have moved ‘Bama above USF in this poll. The UCF game should be a better gauge of where we truly sit. Reigning CUSA champs playing at home against USF (never a conference champion).
