BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—All indications are that the University of South Florida is not taking Western Kentucky lightly. We’ll find out soon enough with kickoff less than five hours away.
Here’s the link to today’s front page story in the Tampa Tribune about the Bulls comparing this game to last year’s game at Florida International.
I reported already, but USF will be without WRs Jessie Hester (hamstring) and Jeffrey Wilson (groin). Also, freshman DE Julius Forte did not make the trip. Hester did not have a catch in last week’s win against Wofford, while Wilson had only one catch – a 22-yard touchdown.
K Maikon Bonani has made the trip, but he will not play.
My pick: While I don’t think Western Kentucky is as bad as it showed against Tennessee last week, I still think the Bulls are the vastly superior team.
Ultimately, I think USF will pull away in the second half and win 34-14.
For all the folks who entered the picks contest, your average score predicted was USF 43-10. If you haven’t entered the picks contest, please click here.

Brett, have to give you props for a pretty darn good prediction on the score of the WKU game! Re: game, unless USF players start playing with some desire and intensity and shore up their OL and LB play, special teams and FG kicking, this will be a very disappointing season. I hope that CJL decides to use another kicker against Charleston in order to get some experience before the meat of the Bulls schedule.

Don, I could also expect the penalties, so-so interest from the players and other assorted things when you’re playing a team you know you’re much better than (it’s human nature), what surprised me though was how well WKU ran on USF. If that’s not corrected, it could be a long season for the Bulls.

Brett, I agree, the human nature issue (taking lower opponent lightly) is probably the main reason that WKU game was played the way it was. That same lackluster approach has been a characteristic of this team for some time now (FIU last year). Seems that Bulls play down to their opponent and get completely intense and prepared when they’re the underdog. Bad thing about that type of team character is that they won’t improve as quickly as is possible and that keeps Grothe into the fourth quarter when B.J. Daniels could be getting more experience. Guess we won’t really know character of this team till the FSU game?
