Probably not much interest from USF fans this week with my AP ballot, but I’ll continue to post it here the rest of the season for those interested. I know you will, but any questions/comments, let me know.
Nov. 2
This week Team Last week
1. Texas Tech 6
2. Penn State 2
3. Alabama 3

15. LSU 16
16. Ball State 17
17. BYU 18
18. Michigan State 21
19. North Carolina 23
20. California 24
21. West Virginia NR
22. Maryland 25
23. Georgia Tech NR
24. Northwestern NR
25. Pittsburgh NR
Almost in (alphabetically): Cincinnati, Kansas, Oregon State
See you later: Florida State, Minnesota, Oregon, Tulsa
Before you ask about the Bulls: Unlikely they’ll return to my Top 25 ballot this season, certainly not unless the Bulls close with victories over Rutgers, UConn and West Virginia. If the loss at Cincinnati didn’t hurt enough, how about Louisville losing to Syracuse, dropping USF into a last-place tie with the Orange?
Quick thoughts: Texas Tech is my new No. 1. The Red Raiders jump to the front after beating Texas. The Red Raiders rolled up 579 yards and outgained Texas by more than 200 yards. The Longhorns dropped only four spots because of their earlier wins this season against Missouri, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. I also kept UT ahead of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. … I moved Florida up three spots with its dismantling of Georgia and even though USC seal-clubbed Washington (who hasn’t?) the Trojans slid behind Florida and remained behind Texas. Both UF and UT have more impressive wins this year than USC. … At the bottom of the poll, four losers drop out: Tulsa, Florida State, Minnesota and Oregon. That opened up four spots for West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Northwestern and Pittsburgh. ... This week’s top games: the nation gets a look at Ball State in a Wednesday night ESPN2 contest against Northern Illinois. On Thursday, TCU visits Utah in an elimination game for a possible BCS bowl. On Saturday, there’s no rest for Texas Tech as Okie State visits the Red Raiders. Also, Alabama visits LSU.

Chris, Florida could very well end up ahead of Boise as early as next week in my rankings. I don’t try and project what will happen in the future, only what has already happened. Florida’s loss to unranked Mississippi at home cost them in my rankings. Florida doesn’t have a very tough schedule left, so if Boise wins out, they will most likely remain ahead of Florida in my rankings.

Nabeel..Boise St.??? Get Serious..lol! Do you actually watch football on Saturday or just read the scores?? If the Gators and Boise St. got on the same filed in an ALL-Blue Classic, UF would dismantle them by at LEAST 20.And no i didn’t go to UF but yes i would root for them over FSU.
Terry…i agree with your assessment of your top 8, with the exception of Alabama of course, putting them below USC performance wise. But as you pointed out until there play and lose to UF i suppose it doesn’t matter where you rank them before that.

Terry, as far as USC v. Penn State in Rose. If Oregon State runs the table - not impossible with games against UCLA, Cal, Arizona and Oregon - Oregon State would get the Rose Bowl nod instead of USC.

Mike, I don’t know how you can stop Tech’s offense unless you use a power running game and eat the clock. Limit the Red Raiders’ chances. As far as USF’s offensive line - the Bulls offensive and defensive lines have historically been undersized. It’s obviously something they would like to improve on. No surprise there. Nabeel, I never disputed the Big East had parity. But parity doesn’t make it a good league.

Brett,
There is no doubt that the UF is 2nd or 3rd best team in the country. However, I also understand that there is no need to cause controversy at this point.
Voters have time to move them up w/o causing heartburn. Especially with the SEC championship to play.
My question is how, in your heart v. logically, do you believe the Gators should be ranked. I.E., who is second or third best team now as opposed to where should that team be ranked?
If PSU and UF both win out in same fashion as they have won lately, who gets ranked higher? FYI, I am not a Gator fan.

Chris, I’m hesitant to put a one-loss team over an undefeated BCS team, especially Big 12/SEC, at this point. I could change in a week or so, though. And the Okie State/OU/Tech scenario, I don’t have a set formula. I would have to see the games play out and also look at the rest of the strength of schedule, margin victory, etc. I do give more weight, though, for a road win than a home win.

My rankings…
Alabama
Texas Tech
Texas
UF
USC
Oklahoma State
PSU
Oklahoma
This will all change in the next two weeks as TT plays OU and OSU… UF plays Bama.
Either way, PSU will play USC in the Rose and will be left in the dark… they will then be exposed as another fraud Big Ten team that is only good enough to top the Big East.
If it’s not a SEC/Big-12 championship, the nation will be robbed by the crooked system again. If PSU beats USC, then maybe they’ll abandon the BCS because Joe Pa will be getting robbed on his way out.

Hard to put UF over UT, OK St and OU, since they all lost to Top 10 teams. UF lost to 5-4 Ole Miss…in the SWAMP! Lucky for them, they lost early, and the Recency Effect rules college football.
I’d love to see UF win out, along with Texas Tech and PSU. That way, UF can sit at home crying Tebow Tears about how they are the best team in the nation, and have to watch th NC game from home.

My top 8 teams are as follows:
1. Alabama
2. Texas Tech
3. Penn State
4. Texas
5. Oklahoma
6. Oklahoma State
7. USC
8. Boise State
I had Florida at #9 last week too. They didn’t move up any in my rankings from last week because I had Georgia ranked at #11 last week.
Posted by Chris, Florida on 11/02 at 05:11 PM
Nabeel, please tell me what 8 teams you think are better than the Gators..and why..? I’m dying to here it..lol.
Posted by Nabeel Mulla, Dayton, OH on 11/02 at 05:05 PM
I told you the Big East has parity…The Cuse beating the Ville this week proves it!
On to my ranking comparisons…
Brett, we share opinions for TCU, BYU, and Michigan State. We’re within 3 spots on almost everyone else. Farthest apart are Florida, who I have at #9; Ball State who I have at #11; and Pitt who I have at #20. I also have Cincy ranked in place of your Maryland pick.

Heh, thanks, Chris. I’d be very interested to see what happens in a 3 way tie scenario in the Big 12 as well. 4 teams in 1 division and 2 of them could make it to the national championship if Penn State and Alabama lose.
Posted by jeffrey saff, annapolis, md on 11/02 at 04:37 PM
This may seem irrelevant but the Tampa skid is over. Bucs win OT. I will make it relevant. Therefore, USF should learn from their Tampa pro brethren. Be tough, go on the road and win a game there. BE TOUGH!!!!

I think Jim Leavitt is just trying to “spread the wealth” around the Big East. Louisville didn’t get a bowl game last season, so Leavitt is applying socialist principles. The loss to Louisville was by design.

Brett,
Can any team stop Texas Tech’s offense? Their offensive line was amazing. Can USF upgrade those line positions so Grothe doesn’t have to end up in the school of hard knocks again next year? I’ll keep my fingers crossed
Posted by Chris, Florida on 11/02 at 11:04 AM
Allen i can understand your logic(you think so much clearer when the Bulls aren’t involved..lol), i also believe the Big 12 overall is stronger than the SEC..at least at the top. I think T.Tech will lose at least once, either on the road or in the Big 12 championship. I hate to see a weak Big Ten getting another free pass to the National Championship, so i’m really hoping Penn St will lay an egg against a fairly strong Michigan State and leave us with either an SEC-Big 12 or USC matchup. Brett i have an interesting scenario for you..if either Okie State or Oklahoma beats T.Tech by by another close margin and 3 of the 4 team(most likely Texas,T.Tech,Okla.) end up with 1 loss and 1 against the other 2, how would you rank them? Just curious
Posted by Paul Seiler, Jupiter, Fl on 11/02 at 09:38 AM
Good ranking, Brett. I hate to see Boise St & Utah so high, especially since Utah won 13-10 last night v. NMexico (who?). But, till they lose, they rise.
As a GatorHater, I hate to say this, but here’s how I see it working out.
PSU has only MichSt left, and will win out to play in the NC game. TexTech was impressive, but they’ve still OK and your OK St games left…and the Big 12 champ game (assuming they win out). That tough road will likely mean 1 loss.
UF will run the table, then beat Alabama…and play PSU for the NC. I HOPE I am wrong, but that’s my guess.

If I had to bet on the team, this is my top 7.
1. Texas Tech
2. Texas
3. Alabama
4. USC
5. Florida
6. Oklahoma
7. Penn State

SYRACUSE BEAT LOUISVILLE?!?!?!?!
GOD BLESS THE BULLS??
NO, NO, NO…...GOD #@*# THE BULLS!!!!!

Chris, Beanie Wells missed that USC game and Pryor wasn’t the starter yet.
Undefeated teams should get the nod at this point. That accounts for both of your scenarios.
I’d easily put Texas over UF, though, seeing as how UT’s loss was much better and they have 3 huge wins that UF just doesn’t have, imo.
Then again, I see Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Vandy previously, Alabama, and UF as being a little overrated. I do think UF has played the best lately out of those, though.
Then again, maybe it’s just tough to see them as good as all those Big 12 teams. The Big 12 has all the best games this year.
Posted by Chris, Florida on 11/02 at 02:20 AM
Brett, do you think Alabama is still a better team than Florida given the disparity of their wins against Georgia? Or are you simply waiting till Florida whoops up an Alabama in the SEC before moving them ahead? Also, how about Penn States relatively weak schedule and the fact that only beat Ohio state by 4 when USC dismantled them by 28. Is the difference between home and away games that vast in playing Ohio State? Or are you simply unwilling at this point in both cases to place a 1 loss big name school above another big name school that is undefeated??
