Morris On Brooks: We’ve Moved On

TAMPA – If you’re among those holding out hope that the Bucs will reconsider their decision to let Derrick Brooks go, forget it. Coach Raheem Morris all but ruled out the idea of Brooks returning Friday after he ran his rookies through the first day of a three-day minicamp,

“You never want to say no to anything,’’ Morris said. “You never want to be that way, period. But we’ve made plans, we’ve moved on. We went out and got [Angelo] Crowell [to play strongside linebacker]; we moved Jermaine Phillips to [weakside] linebacker and we’ve got Barrett Ruud playing [middle linebacker.

“And we have some guys in the stable here like Quincy Black and Geno Hayes; we went out and got Niko Koutouvides and we’ve got Jamaal Johnson. We’ve got some guys stacked in the row that we’re going to let compete.

“We actually felt pretty good about our linebackers going into the draft, so we just want to see what we have going on.’’

Brooks was released Feb. 25 and he has since expressed a desire to play at least one more season in the NFL. He has said he would not rule out a return to the Bucs but it seems likely that a return to the league will have to be made with another team.

Still think its the wrong choice. Should’ve let the guy retire in a year as a Buccaneer. He still had much to give right now, on the field and in the locker room. Class act guy that they gave a crappy shaft to.

If we start out badly, it will be interesting to see if the locker room quickly turns on our new HC without Brooks’s leadership around. My guess is they will because Morris has little street cred. Players aren’t stupid and amateur hour is over quick with out a good MC (or HC).

I think they fans like your truely must understand that this decision was made to move on and in a better position then when Tampa finish in a 4 game losing period. I really like what Tampa has done. And I really do like the 1st seven game of the 16 game season. With Tampa bye week after the overseas game against New England. I believe what I have seen who Tampa brought and the different outcome. Tampa Did The Correct Thing. Iam hoping to come to Tampa to see the last preseason game.

Here’s the hope - That Morris and Bates can find a way to create 3rd and longs with Bates’ scheme, then go back to what the Bucs did best on passing downs. The challenge will come in having enough talent at the corner positions, to make passing on first and second downs an issue for opposing QB’s. Playing man to man is so difficult now, with all the rules geared towards the passing game. Green Bay had gotten away with it until last season. Bottom line is this…no pass rush…no victories. Period!

I understand moving on and trying to get better, but as a franchise-long Buccaneer fan, I am still heart-broken over the release of No. 55. I understand moving on and trying to improve, but I don’t beleive this was the right move. Sure, Brooks was getting older, but he was still productive. It also goes deeper than that. He was a great team leader, a great role model and a great citizen of the community. And bottom line, the greatest Buc in history (along with Lee Roy) should be allowed to go out on his own terms, with a farewell season. He stuck with this franchise through good and bad, and despite the changes at the top, the franchise owes it to him to do the same. Make it right guys, bring back the Captain for one final voyage!
