More Strange Coaching News

We’re in the middle of the college football bowl season, but much of the postseason news has centered on odd stories about head coaches.

USF fans are well aware of an ongoing investigation into an alleged incident between Bulls coach Jim Leavitt and sophomore walk-on RB Joel Miller during halftime of the Nov. 21 game against Louisville.

Florida fans don’t know what to make of the future of head coach Urban Meyer after his weekend flip-flop, and Kansas coach Mark Mangino recently resigned under pressure following complaints about his treatment of players.

The latest coach to step into the spotlight? Texas Tech’s Mike Leach.

Click here to read about an alleged incident at Texas Tech involving the son of former SMU star running back Craig James, now a prominent ESPN college football analyst.

Good idea KozeeKingdom, thanks for reading.

Hey Scott,

This is off topic but when you post links to outside websites, you should have the new website open in a new window so as not to take your reader completely away from your blog.  Unlike a certain past writer on this blog, we actually like your stuff and want to be able to bounce back to your postings after following a link.

99 and G, your bloodlust is, frankly, appalling.

What are you guys, five? Read the rest of the Trib once in a while. You heard of Joe Redner? The city always acts quickly, screws up, and ends up writing him a check when he sues them. Defamation of character - of a guy who has the $$$ to hire lawyers to take your house - is a big deal. Here’s he fundamentals: if you have to talk to 100 people and every one of the first 10 says corroborating information, you don’t need the other 90. But if nobody agrees, or everyone denies, then you have to go through all 100. That takes time, fellas, and that’s why some of these other schools are either moving quickly or will be writing checks. Stay tuned to those other dramas as they unfold and see how much they pay out. And they almost ALWAYS pay out.

In defense of USF99, his comments were only asking a logical question: if this investigation has found nothing, then why not clear Leavitt’s name and do so prior to the bowl game and eliminate any distractions to him and the team?  If something bad has already been determined, I don’t see Leavitt as a threat to any player, but if that were the case, then firing Leavitt now would be a real distraction to the team. Either this investigation is taking a really long time, or USF has already made their decision, but they’re waiting to announce after the game.  I’m not a Leavitt fan, but I don’t wish ill on him either.  If all is leaning toward no issue, then it seems to me that USF should clear his name ASAP prior to game.

Dan:

The Bulls and USF coaches/administrators without passports got processed unusually quick at the passport office at Hillsborough County Courthouse a couple of weeks ago…Yes, it usually does take longer, but due to the odd nature of this situation, USF got expedited service…

As for the investigation into Leavitt, investigators are still conducting interviews I’m told. I’m expecting a report soon after this game, but some times these things drag out longer than expected…the quicker the better in this situation.

99, I’m glad you know what an ad hominem attack is. Your first post is full of them. It’s not even subtle. It’s disgusting, and I’m glad people called you on it. You want to disagree without being disagreeable? Your posts here are completely disagreeable, and I think most alumni would concur. Interviewing 100+ people at a minimum 1 hour esch would be over 2 weeks of time for the 2-person team doing the review, not accounting for anyone’s schedules. But since you obviously studied yellow journalism and not math or HR at USF, I expect this rationale is beyond you. You simply want Leavitt gone because you erroneously think that then we will magically win the Big East.

I clearly stated: “if the initial accounts are accurate…”

If the “real story is already out: the kid’s dad blew it out of proportion ” then the University should publicly says so, rather than leave this hanging the bowl game. That was the main point of my prior post.

This investigation has already taken longer than the Mangino investigation, which was more complex as it involved not only current players and staff, put past players as well.

And lets hold off on the ad hominem attacks, they don’t add to the discussion, and it’s disappointing to see on a forum with so many fellow alumni. We can disagree on certain topics without being disagreeable, after all, at the end of the day we all want the same thing: Bull victories.

I was wondering if/how the International Bowl helps people get their passports. There’s no way 20,000 USF fans plus players and coaches etc could all get passports in time to go up there, even if they wanted to. It takes almost 2 weeks to get a passport when it’s not the holidays, sometimes longer. How was that supposed to work? Were you supposed to pay the fees for a passport ahead of time in case they went there? I’m happy that so many players got it done, and I’ll be watching from home. Go Bulls!

USF99: “Perceived” as being thorough? As opposed to actually BEING thorough? Gee, no bias there, you bozo.

You already have Leavitt tried and convicted, so maybe you should start posting on Pravda.

The real story is already out: the kid’s dad blew it out of proportion and had to recant. Unfortunately, USF still has to interview over 100 people - by 2 investigators - and most of the 100 are in Canada right now. But thanks for continuing to be an @ss.

Hey USF99

“the University is continuing to put these student-athletics at risk by keeping them exposed to a potentially violent and unstable individual”

What the heck?  Amp up the drama a little too much drama queen?  Did your daddy not paddle you enough as a child?

Do you even understand the definition of “thorough investigation”?  It takes longer than you think.

Posted by  USF99,  on 12/29  at  01:33 AM

Is there any update on the Leavitt investigation? While I understand the University wants to be perceived as being thorough, one would think that there would be at least some level of urgency. After all, if the initial accounts are accurate, then the University is continuing to put these student-athletics at risk by keeping them exposed to a potentially violent and unstable individual; and if there is no merit to the allegations, you would think that they would want to make that clear prior to the international attention that will be on the program for the bowl game.
