ST. PETERSBURG Matt Moore’s incredible year had one more WOW moment.
The Rays rookie received a contract extension worth a guaranteed $14 million over five years. The deal includes option years for 2017, 2018 and 2019. If the Rays pick up those years, the deal will be worth $39.75 over eight years.
The Rays will make the official announcement at 2 p.m. this afternoon during a press conference at Tropicana Field.
The 22-year-old left-hander exploded on the scene last season when he rose from Double A Montgomery to the big club. He was 12-3 with a 1.92 ERA and 210 strikeouts in 155 combined innings with Montgomery and Triple A Durham.
After making one September start for the Rays – five innings, zero runs, 11 strikeouts at Yankee Stadium – Moore earned the Rays only postseason victory when he pitched seven scoreless innings against the Rangers in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.
The contract is in line with the Rays policy of locking up their talented players earlier in their careers, getting them to give up their arbitration eligible years for guaranteed money.
They did this with James Shields, Evan Longoria and Wade Davis.
