Monte Likes Derrick Harvey

The Bucs are interested in adding playmakers in this year’s draft, but do not be surprised if Florida junior defensive end Derrick Harvey name is called by Tampa Bay.

I just finished attending Florida’s Pro Day and Harvey (6-4/262) was the player every scout drooled over. Each scout knew what to expect from WR Andre Caldwell, who is rising up draft boards after superior NFL combine and Pro Day workouts, but Harvey’s performance had them struggling to keep their poker face.

I noticed Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin showed a lot of interest in Harvey. After Harvey showed his tremendous coordination, agility and speed through numerous drills, Kiffin was one of only two scouts (Jacksonville was the other) that spent time individually talking with the Florida standout. After speaking with Harvey, Kiffin left and said that was the only player he was in Gainesville to see.

“I’m not going to say a whole lot because other people read newspapers, but he had a nice workout. He really did,” Kiffin said. “He’s a nice young man. He works very hard and I can tell he stays in shape. He’s in good shape.”

Harvey is a three-year letterman who finished his Florida career with 90 tackles and 20.5 sacks, ninth in school history. He led Florida with 8.5 sacks and 17 tackles for a loss last season, was an AP All-SEC Honorable Mention honoree and a second team All-SEC selection by the coaches.

Tampa Bay is currently stacked at defensive end with Gaines Adams, Kevin Carter, Marques Douglas, Greg White, Jimmy Wilkerson, Patrick Chukwurah and Marquies Gunn, but that does not mean the Bucs would shy away from drafting Harvey.

“If you watched the Super Bowl, you can’t have enough good pass rushers,” Kiffin said. “The Giants kept rolling them in there. They went eight deep. [Defensive] ends are kind of like corners. You can’t have enough of them. You can’t have enough good rush ends or cover corners.”

Harvey might be snapped up before Tampa Bay selects at No.20, but if available, expect him to be a player the Bucs takes a serious look at, especially if they trade for a playmaker that day.

Cody Ubben: I said the Bucs were having trouble picking WR’s, not that my choice would be a problem. Jenkins is an ok corner to pick, but I like Hardy better. No contradiction there.

"Given the Bucs lack of success drafting WR’s, my vote is to draft a big WR”. You couldn’t have contradicted yourself anymore.

Heres how it should go. Given the Bucs lack of success drafting WR’s, my vote is to draft an amazing CB like Mike Jenkins.

Monte likes Harvey. So what. It is not the Bucs greatest need, unless they have worked out a trade for White or another DE for picks or players. My guess it is Monte’s wish list and the Bucs will draft for greatest need. Right now it is a toss up between WR and CB. Given the Bucs lack of success in drafting WR’s, my vote would be to draft a big WR such as Hardy or speed such as Jackson if not available then draft CB. Placco at QB would be an interesting pick.

Good article Anwar! i hope you can chat more with the Bucs staff to let us know what are they thinking. People should read more carefully before posting negative feedback on the writers!
I dont think they will go with DE at pick #20, like most Bucs Fans out there, i expect to see a CB & WR in rounds 1 & 2. By the way i really liked that you posted several videos of draft prospects on another art. nice!

Mitch, not sure what you wanted me to do. If the defensive coordinator for the Bucs tells me he is interested in a guy and would draft him regardless of how many defensive ends they have, am I supposed to tell him “You’re nuts. You need a playmaker,” and ignore what he said? Yes, Tampa needs a playmaker. We all anticipate the Bucs will draft one or more, but as you know, there are no guarantees in the draft (just ask any Jets fan).

If he’s there at 20 we’ll grab him. I think everybody forgets that Greg White is 28 or 29 years old. He may be like a rookie in the sense that he just showed up on the scene in the NFL, but he’s no rookie and he was a situational guy for us last year. Derrick Harvey would give us a truly feared pass rush.

Excuse me Mr Duane Davis, do you have a clue what you’re talking about.Just imagine Adams on one side and Harvey on the other.Great bookends like FSU had years ago. Like Kiffin said, you can’t ever have enough ends.

DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.  All winter Anwar has talked about getting a playmaker on offense and now he writes a piece about drafting another DE and trading for a playmaker.  Well, genius, what chips are the Bucs going to use to get a playmaker outside of a 1st round pick or a combination of later round picks and players?  Plus, isn’t a greater need right now DT?  Last time I checked we had 2 up and coming DE’s and have a couple of more prospects in the wings.  No way we use the 20th pick in the draft to get Harvey (besides, he will most likely be off the board by then).

Was this a news article or a PR release from U of F. This guy was “2nd Team SEC,” Honorale Mention AP and we’re going to waste a No.1 on this guy. Take your blue and orange glasses off, this guy is no better than a 2 and I would give odds on that. GEEEESH. Quit falling in love with everything that comes out of Florida. This is a smokescreen by Monte and thanks for fanning the flames.
