The Rays completed the deal with Jose Molina, signing the catcher to a reported one-year, $1.5 million deal with a 2013 club option for $1.5 million or a $300,000 buyout.
Molina, 36, is a career backup who will form one-half of a platoon this season, more than likely with Jose Lobaton now that John Jaso has been traded to Seattle.
A career backup, Molina (career stats http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/molinjo01.shtml) is known for his work behind the plate, especially his ability to throw out base stealers (40 percent for his career) and help pitchers get through games (on his ability to frame pitches http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15093).
He was a member of two World Series championship teams, in 2002 with the Angels and 2009 with the Yankees.
He’s spent the past five seasons in the American League East, the first three with the Yankees and the last two with the Jays.
