TAMPA – The Sporting News has released its latest Mock Draft and there are some real surprises there.
The biggest involves the Lions, who are now predicted to take Oklahoma State left tackle Russell Okung as protection for quarterback Matt Stafford’s blind side.
With the Rams slated to take Sam Bradford first overall, the Bucs are left with their choice of either Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh or Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
The Bucs pick, according to TSN: Suh. He’s still the best player in the draft, TSN argues, but the Rams and Lions need to fill other holes in their lineup allow him to fall to the Bucs.
If this seems like a dream scenario it’s because it is. It’s truly hard to imagine the Bucs would actually have their pick of not just Suh and McCoy, but Suh, McCoy and Tennessee safety Eric Berry.
Those three players are, after all, the three best players in the draft. As TSN suggests, though, it’s quite possible all three will still be available when the Bucs pick comes around. The reason is simple.
It’s been fairly well established now that the Rams need a quarterback, and if Bradford’s shoulder looks sound to them they may have no choice but to make him the first player off the board.
The Lions, meanwhile, have already done a lot to address their need for defensive line help by signing tackle Corey Williams and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch.
What the Lions need now is a left tackle to protect Stafford and help make the offense go. The catch is that they can probably get that by trading down a few spots.
