Luke Easterling's Draft Analysis: |

Here we go, folks, my final first-round projection. Just like last year, I’m predicting just one trade. Enjoy.
*-projected trade
1. Detriot Lions – Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia – Even if a contract isn’t signed tonight, Stafford will be chosen as the new face of the franchise.
2. St. Louis Rams – Jason Smith, OT, Baylor – Success for the Rams starts with keeping Marc Bulger off his back. Smith gets the nod here over Eugene Monroe.
3. Kansas City Chiefs – Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest – Arguably the best overall prospect in the draft, Curry will team up with Derrick Johnson to anchor the middle of the defense.
4. Seattle Seahawks – Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia – Much like the Rams, the Seahawks need to protect their QB if they have any hope of turning things around anytime soon. Monroe is as polished and complete as they come.
5. Cleveland Browns – Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech – Even if they don’t trade Braylon Edwards, Crabtree is just too good to pass up, injuries and speed questions aside.
6. Cincinnati Bengals – Andre Smith, OT, Alabama – The Bengals need a left tackle, and character concerns have never scared off the Cincy brass. Smith’s talent is more than worth this pick.
7. Oakland Raiders – Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland – This pick only makes sense if you’re Al Davis. Size/speed combo to die for, but forget those non-essentials like technique, route-running and production.
8. Washington Redskins (from JAX)* – Mark Sanchez, QB, USC – The ‘Skins will pull the trigger if Sanchez falls this far, and the Jags should be glad to oblige. Jason Campbell would likely be traded by the end of the day.
9. Green Bay Packers – Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas – Orakpo will help ease the shift to a 3-4 scheme as an edge rusher, but must improve in coverage to reach his full potential.
10. San Francisco 49ers – B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College – The ‘Niners land a mosnter for the middle of the 3-4 who can keep interior linemen away from Patrick Willis.
11. Buffalo Bills – Everette Brown, DE, Florida State – The Bills are hurting for a dynamic pass rusher, and few possess the burst that Brown has.
12. Denver Broncos – Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU – Should the Broncos not trade up for Sanchez, they will use both first round picks to address their porous defense. Jackson is the perfect fit as a 3-4 DE.
13. Jacksonville Jaguars (from WAS)* - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri – This would be a dream situation for the Jags, who could end up trading down and getting an extra pick, while still ending up with the player they may have been targeting all along. Maclin would learn from Torry Holt for a couple of seasons before taking over as the #1 WR.
14. New Orleans Saints – Malcolm Jenkins, DB, Ohio State – The Saints need serious help in the defensive backfield, and Jenkins brings size and versatility, as he could fit as either a corner or free safety.
15. Houston Texans – Brian Cushing, OLB, USC – While the Texans could use a bigger back to complement Steve Slaton, Cushing fills a more immediate need and is a better value than any othe running backs in this draft.
16. San Diego Chargers – Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC – This may be the only real need for the Chargers, and they end up getting the best pure inside linebacker in the draft.
17. New York Jets – Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State – The Jets are in no way satisfied with their QB situation, and may not be able to pass on Freeman’s size and arm strength.
18. Denver Broncos – Aaron Maybin, OLB/DE, Penn State – The Broncos could end up with perfect fits for the 3-4 defense if both Jackson and Maybin fall into their laps.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee – Defense is where the immediate needs are for the Bucs, and is Ayers is still on the board, his balanced ability as a pass rushing and run stuffer should make him the easy choice.
20. Detroit Lions (from DAL) – Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi – A perfect situation for the Lions, in which they could land a franchise QB and franchise left tackle in round one.
21. Philadelphia Eagles – Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia – The Eagles need someone to take some pressure and workload off of Brian Westbrook, and they could end up landing Moreno, the best overall back in the draft.
22. Minnesota Vikings – Percy Harvin, WR, Florida – A late visit by head coach Brad Childress to Gainesville to visit Harvin earlier this week may indicate that the Vikes are prepared to take a chance on the risky playmaker. Harvin could be even more dangerous playing on turf for at least half of the year.
23. New England Patriots – Connor Barwin, DE/LB/TE, Cincinnati – A tailor-made Pats pick, Barwin can literally do everything. I doubt the Pats will risk letting him slide past this pick.
24. Atlanta Falcons – Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi – With Tony Gonzalez on board, the Falcons can now focus on defense with this pick, as they should’ve from the start. Jerry would be a great value here, and head coach Mike Smith loves defensive tackles.
25. Miami Dolphins – Clay Matthews, OLB, USC – There are bigger needs, but Matthews is the type of player that fits Bill Parcells’ mold perfectly.
26. Baltimore Ravens – Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut – The Ravens need help in the secondary, and they need it now. Butler has been a fast riser over the past month or so, and would make a lot of sense here.
27. Indianapolis Colts – Evander “Ziggy” Hood, DT, Missouri – The Colts have no bigger hole than defensive tackle, and while they hope Peria Jerry will fall, Hood would be a solid consolation prize.
28. Buffalo Bills (from CAR thru PHI) – Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State – The Bills would love to see the best and most complete TE in the draft fall this far.
29. New York Giants – Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers – Britt’s combination of size and speed will help offset the loss of Plaxico Burress.
30. Tennessee Titans – Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois – WR is a bigger need, but the Titans also need help in the secondary, and might overlook Davis’ inconsistency in favor of his pure phyiscal ability.
31. Arizona Cardinals – Chris “Beanie” Wells, RB, Ohio State – They more than likely have Connecticut’s Donald Brown pegged here, but if Wells slides to them, I doubt they pass on him.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers – Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest – While undersized, Smith is the best pure cover corner in the draft, and would fill a huge need for the Steelers.

9 picks right for the second year in a row! That ranked you pretty high nationally last year, didn’t it? You should post the Mock Draft Scorecard so we can get the comparisons. Great draft coverage as always.
