An early goal gives Kansas City its first road victory of the season as Jimmy Neilsen holds off Columbus in the second half in Wednesday’s Major League Soccer action.
KANSAS CITY 1, COLUMBUS 0: Rookie Teal Bunbury’s first MLS goal was enough for the Wizards to earn just their fourth victory of the season, and first since June 10 against Philadelphia, but it was the performance of Neilsen that proved crucial.
Neilsen made seven saves, including six in the second half, to earn the shutout, bailing his side out after a poor turnover led to an opportunity for Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Neilsen also saved well from Emmanuel Ekpo late as Ekpo’s shot flew through a crowd of players after a corner.
TONIGHT’S GAME
SEATTLE (4-8-4) AT D.C. UNITED (3-9-3): The Sounders will be without Freddy Ljungberg tonight, who didn’t travel to the nation’s capital with an ankle injury. Seattle was on the verge of earning its first victory in over a month, but a second-half sending off gave Dallas momentum and a late goal earned a draw on Sunday night.
United has been played progressively better, earning back-to-back draws with San Jose and New York, and they defeated Seattle 3-2 in their first meeting this season just over a month ago. Chris Pontius was the hero that night, notching a hat trick before D.C. held off a furious rally by the Sounders who scored in the 89th and 90th minutes.
