New York grabs a late winner to end a four-game losing streak, and San Jose and Columbus play to a tie out west in Wednesday’s Major League Soccer action.
NEW YORK 2, HOUSTON 1: Juan Pablo Angel’s stoppage-time free kick gave the Red Bulls all three points and ended their four-game slide, moving them back into second place in the Eastern Conference.
New York had taken the lead in the first half, Sinisa Ubiparipovic being in the right place at the right time to control and finish Chris Albright’s long shot after a blocked free kick. John Wolyniac almost made it 2-0 when he hit the crossbar in the second half, but Brian Ching tied the game for the Dynamo moments later.
That set the stage for Angel’s winner, giving the Red Bulls their first league victory in over a month.
COLUMBUS 2, SAN JOSE 2: The Crew took the lead twice, but the Earthquakes hit back each time as both sides took a point from their meeting at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Eddie Gaven gave Columbus the lead in the fifth minute, tapping home from close range, but Arturo Alvarez tied the game for San Jose a minute later.
Both sides had chances to take the lead, Bobby Convey’s spectacular volley going just wide, but the Crew retook the lead in the 70th minute, Chad Marshall scoring his first of the season from a corner. The Crew’s lead would again be short-lived though, as Chris Wondolowski scored his sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute to earn his side a point.
