Hillsborough’s Marlon Mitchell and Mitchell’s Patrick Shuster are among 144 players from across the nation vying for a coveted spot at the 18-under National Baseball Team Trials this week at the invite-only Tournament of Stars at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C.
The eight-team tournament begins Tuesday and runs through Sunday. Mitchell, a rising senior catcher, will play for the PONY Team, while Schuster, a rising senior left-handed pitcher, will play for the Dixie Team.
The 2008 18-under National Team will be selected solely from players in this tournament. Thirty four players will be invited from the TOS to the 18-under National Team Trials, which are scheduled for July 10-17 in Phoenix. From there, 20 will make the team that is set to compete in the IBAF World AAA Junior Championships July 25-Aug. 3 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
“I’m just trying to go out here and work hard and give it all I’ve got; just go all out,” Mitchell said Monday evening. “I think my chances are pretty good.
“It’s like a dream come true to be able to actually come out here and try out [for the 18-under National Team]. I’m very excited.”
Plant High’s Mychal Givens and Clearwater Central Catholic’s Ryan Weber were selected last summer to the 18-under National Team, which won a bronze medal at the COPABE AAA Junior Championships in Ixtapa, Mexico. That showing qualified the 18-under U.S. squad for this year’s world championship’s in Canada.
The players selected for this year’s 18-under National Team Trials are expected to be announced at the conclusion of the tournament Sunday.
You can follow the progress of both Mitchell and Schuster at the USA Baseball website.

Tyler Luper-Great projectable body, great arm, great overall catcher, and a great bat that just needs a few adjustments, Tyler is a big prospect for 09, One can say that he is in the shadows of Marlon for reasons beyond his control however he does start at 1st which is also a great fit for him with his size, it also gives him two options when he plays at the next level. Travis Porter- Excellent receiver who has made big strides over this summer with every aspect of his game 1.8-1.9 pop times 69 on the sparq test. His swing has been completely overhauled as he has started working with Reggie Williams and has developed a great swing at the plate.

There are three catchers in hillsborough county that I have had the pleasure of seeing who I have seen over the summer circuit who really have no “stats” or have garnered any rewards such as all state all saladino, etc. Doug Burlett-Mitchell Great receiver great blocker great overall catching tools that will definitely take him places. Struggles with the bat, but has the same approach consistently and makes hard line drive contact, over the summer made great strides with the bat and his arm has greatly improved as well.

Hillsborough player I understand your gripe about the situation. However to tell you the truth “stats” really do not matter. Ive seen countless numbers of players who hit above 300 in high school with aluminum in their hand that have the worst hitting mechanics in the world. Then when they get to the next level they are barely touching .100. What we are looking for are the hitting tools nessecary to compete at the next level. It is different for kids that play over seas because they have been hitting with wood all their life and either are natural hitters or they have been hitting a certain way for so long they almost never miss and they make hard consistent contact.

. Ive been asked by certain persons to set some things straight a to why Marlon is looked at the way he is by scouts. Marlon has a projectable body, a 60/80 arm, and a great base behind the plate. He may not be hitting for “stats” but he has a great left handed stroke that will eventually come around. This is from what I’ve seen and people that I work with have reported. He also received a 72 on the sparq training test which is not easy to do that shows the exceptional athletic ability this kid shows. He also received a 9.5 at both pg events he has attended, now if you guys want to tell pro scouts and college coaches and recruiters who have been doing this for 15+years, 20+years myself then go ahead.

Wow im a good friend of Marlon mitchell and all of you haters on here are hilarious we have Dillion Esche’s uncle on here bashing Marlon and this guy lives with his mom!! and i checked dillion’s report on prospectwire and this kid throws 79mph from the infield and runs a 7.5!! this kid has no athletic ability and no one on hillsborough can compare to Marlons ability. And for the fat nunez’s why are u coming back to hillsborough? nobody wants you and u think white will take the little faget but my point is you will never be a baseball player just like your brother and one more thing STOP HATING!!!

Look, the bottom line is this, you are not a “SUPERSTAR”, you can’t hit out of a wet paper bag, and basically the whole team dislikes you. Even the black kids made fun of you last year when your daddy made some copies and went to Bertha with them. You and your parents can say what you want about a scout told you that you would be better off staying at Hillsborough. People already know that that isn’t true. You won’t leave Hillsborough because NO OTHER SCHOOL WILL PUT UP WITH YOUR ATTITUDE. Weren’t you going to Middleton since Jaime left (cause you and him didn’t get along). Vernon don’t even want you. An last but not least, HILLSBOROUGH DOES NOT WANT YOU BUT THEY ARE STUCK WITH YOU! How many hits did you get again up there?

An as for “DICK” I really can careless what you think of me. The last time I checked Casey made ALL-COUNTY and ALL-SALIDINO, something that you will never make cause you can’t hit if a beach ball was coming your way. An “DICK” you don’t know how to spell at all. Maybe if you would stop worrying about going to McDonalds during lunch. That might come back to bite you next year. An the goatee (you don’t even know how to spell) thing, well that’s a white thing, you wouldn’t understand. Atleast he doesn’t braid it like your dirty brothers do.

Player Parent, of coarse there is something to it, Marlon’s daddy has to use scare tactics towards Kenny White so his son will play. Marlon has already been to “3” high schools! He batted less then .100 for the whole year, and he never missed an atbat. That tells me that his parents play a major role of intimidation on the head coach. Then he has to make fun of others to make himself feel better.
Emilio, tell me where to go so I can read where I made fun of Mallard and Burgess. Tell me where I can find that.
An if Marlon made the cut WITHOUT a single hit, then his parents cut a check.

Just waned to comment that I thought Hillsborough Player was just some jealous kid. Then I was at a camp last Friday an got to see Luper catch. He is a pretty darn good! And he is a physically a lot more developed than Marlon. He is huge! I asked some people at the camp why he doesn’t catch @ Hills and no one knew. So maybe there is something to all this.

Naw, that’s Marlon’s daddy that makes copys and runs to the AD of Hillsborough. You can put all the names you want, we know that it is you Marlon (Emilio/Dick/Hector). Your still a waste of space. Atleast my teammates like me and WANT me on the team. How many hits did you get up there? And you think you made the cut? Only a “SUPERSTAR” would think that.

Why dont you get off the internet bro and go hit your garbage godson or whatever kin he is to you some fungo because he blows! I mean he makes like three errors a game and thinks he is Dustin Pedroia? Wow what a joke!.How many times is he gonna run away from a groundball coming like 20 mph. GET A GAME BUDDY! I think Looper should have thrown the haymaker your way instead of Mitchell’s because you probably would have ran and told the Athletic Director.

Don’t hate on a kid, that is blessed with talent, that you are your relatives have never had. You hated on Mallard and you hated on Burgess. Get a life! Can’t make everybody happy! and only God can judge! By the way, somebody told me that he made the cut! I bet you won’t step to his Dad Pete! especially, if you new about his background. The man can handle himself. Direct your energy into developing your own kid. By the way, what does this all matter? Jesus loves you, and so do we! Keep tacking us BABY! BREAKING NEWS- MARLON “SUPERSTAR” MITCHELL FAILS TO GET A HIT IN USA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT. WHAT A WASTE OF SPACE!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Hillsborough Player, on 06/21 at 11:34 AM
Like I said before Adam took my post off.......Marlon WILL NOT have 1 hit in this tournament. An so far he doesn’t have atleast one hit in pool play. That away Marlon.....you keep
balling......."SUPERSTAR"!!

Everybody that is familiar with high school baseball knows that Marlon is a headache. I don’t think I’ll comment on the other stuff cause I don’t know the full truth. What I do know is that this paper said that he was one of the top players on the team last year in the pre-season report and he did horrible last year. At the games that I saw, he had to many pass balls that should have been blocked and didn’t hit the ball at all. I went to maxpreps to try to do some research on him and he was the only player with no stats. To me, that tells the whole story on how his year went.

This is my last and final post for the night as an old man needs to get to bed. Someone mentioned Casey Nunez on this board, that kid had some serious potential and would have been big in the 07 class if he would have dropped weight and had been “exposed” to more people. Unfortunately he didnt have a stick like Jamie Mallard who is a natural hitter with horrible mechanics, but makes it work every time Ive seen him. Jamie is another awesome player who would have been picked alot higher in the draft but he was missing a few things mainly the weight issue. Thats it Keep it simple on here young men and dads remember your talking about a kid here who has to see this stuff written about him.
