University of South Florida true freshman Terrence Mitchell was named the Big East Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in the Bulls 24-12 victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday night.
Mitchell, a Hillsborough High product, averaged 47 yards on two punt returns against the Hilltoppers. His 67-yard return in the third quarter help set up the Bulls’ third touchdown, a 1-yard sneak from quarterback B.J. Daniels that put USF ahead 21-0.
The 67-yard return also ranks as the fourth longest in program history and the longest return that did not go for a touchdown, and his 94 total punt return yards were the most for a Bulls player since 2008.
In addition, sophomore running back Demetris Murray was named to the Big East honor roll following a career-best performance against Western Kentucky. Murray rushed for 115 yards on 15 carries to lead a Bulls ground attack, and he now ranks as USF’s leading rusher through three games with 232 yards.
