A few of things are obvious when it comes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
First, we all know Bucs receiver Antonio Bryant is an unrestricted free agent who may not re-sign with the team. Second, we know the Bucs do not have another proven playmaking receiver on their roster. Third, we know quarterback Josh Freeman needs a go-to wide receiver in order to be successful.
What is also common knowledge is receiver Brandon Marshall wants out of Denver. He played high school football at Lake Howell High School (Florida) and the University of Central Florida. I remember a conference call in 2008 prior to Tampa Bay’s game at Denver (Oct. 5) when Marshall expressed his disappointment about not being drafted by Tampa Bay. In fact, he pointed out that the Bucs chose Maurice Stovall over him and it obviously had bothered him since 2006.
Now after reading the Mile High Report, I can say a Marshall to Tampa Bay trade would not get done under the parameters they outlined. Here is their story Does Brandon Marshall To The Bucs Make Sense For Both Parties Sayre Bedinger agreed with me that trading could be a possibility, but his trade proposal was “Brandon Marshall to Tampa Bay for Two 2nd-round picks (3, 42nd overall) and 5th-round pick.” I would be tremendously surprised if Bucs General Manager Mark Dominik didn’t spit out his water if he actually heard that proposal.
Dominik spoke with reporter Roy Cummings earlier this week at the Senior Bowl and stressed how important it would be for Tampa Bay to build through the draft. If you missed that story, click here QnA With Mark Dominik to read what Dominik said.
I can not see a scenario where the Bucs get rid of three draft picks (especially two second rounders) for Marshall. This team is committed to building through the draft, and if truth be known, the Bucs have an extremely talented college scouting department.
If you look at last year’s draft, QB Josh Freeman (1st round), DT Roy Miller (third round), DE Kyle Moore (fourth round) and WR Sammie Stroughter (seventh round) all made the team and were contributors. The Bucs also received contributions from T Demar Dotson and RB Kareem Huggins, who were undrafted agents who appeared in games last season. With all the needs Tampa Bay has on defense, trading out the second round would not make any sense.
Last year, the Bucs traded their 2009 second round pick and a fifth round pick in 2010 for former Cleveland TE Kellen Winslow. The Bucs might be willing to do something similar for Marshall, but anything more for a player who doesn’t want to be there not only does not make sense, it will not happen.
Don’t think this image of Marshall will not play into negotiations with any team (kicking a ball during practice and refusing to catch during drills):
Then there is this:
However, he was found not guilty Broncos’ Marshall found not guilty
