Two of Hillsborough County’s top girls golfers helped the North team remain undefeated in the fifth annual Junior Florida Cup, an event that features some of the state’s top junior golfers.
Steinbrenner’s Alex Milan and Durant’s Madison Opfer helped the North squad defeat the South 17 1/2 to 14 1/2 in the Ryder Cup-style event held this week at the Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club in Ocala. Milan and Opfer, who also was on the North’s cup-winning team last summer, combined to help the North earn five points.
Milan went undefeated at the event. She helped earn two points Wednesday when she teamed with Heather Proctor to win a morning four-ball match, 3 & 2 over the South’s Epiphany Prophet and Alexandra Papell, and teamed with Matt Cote to win an afternoon foursome, 6 & 5 over the South’s Rocky Khara and Papell. She then defeated Prophet 2 & 1 in a singles match Thursday.
Opfer and her four-ball partner, Kristine Odaiyar, narrowly dropped their match Wednesday morning, losing 3 & 2 to the South’s Alexandria Ramirez and Kristen Swindell. However, Opfer and foursome partner Joey Petronio defeated Ramirez and Andrew Wong 2 & 1 in the afternoon, and Opfer followed with a 3 & 1 victory over Stephanie Carlozzi in Thursday’s singles match.
