COLUMBIA, S.C. — Don’t expect an organized Heisman Trophy campaign for Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, Gators coach Urban Meyer said in his Sunday teleconference.
Meyer said he stumped a little for Utah quarterback Alex Smith in 2004, but he did that because he knew Smith wouldn’t receive as much attention as players from power-conference teams. Tebow, Meyer said, receives plenty of attention because of Florida’s place in the college football world and because of the SEC’s television contract, which places the conference’s best two games on national television each week.
“I imagine a lot of people will see [Tebow] play,” Meyer said.
Meanwhile, Oregon — the University of Nike — is working hard to make a case for quarterback Dennis Dixon. The school bought ad time on ESPN before the Ducks faced Arizona State on Nov. 3 for a Dixon-for-Heisman commercial. Remember, this is the same school that once had a giant Joey Harrington placed on the side of a building in Manhattan.
