GAINESVILLE — Urban Meyer already has picked out two freshmen he expects to see playing when the Gators open their season next month: safety Major Wright and receiver Deonte Thompson.
“Unless, when they put the pads on, they turn into something other than football players,” Meyer said, “those are two who for sure will play.”
The Gators won’t strap on pads until Thursday. Then things should get interesting. Meyer and his staff seem to like this freshman class even better than last year’s. If those players are hungry, there are spots up for grabs.

What happening with Chris Rainey, former Lakeland superstar?
Is he as fast as Percy Harvin.Bubba Caldwell?
Rainey was supposed to have gained 10 pounds lifting this summer. Is that true?
Will Rainey start at tailback?

Ken,
Chris seems to be doing fine. He’s very fast, but I’m not sure if he is as fast as Percy Harvin or Deonte Thompson. I think you could probably draw quite a crowd if those guys raced. I don’t think he’ll start at tailback. It looks like Kestahn Moore will start the season there, but don’t be shocked if Jarred Fayson winds up getting a lot of carries.
