Jesuit’s Bobby Eveld became the final high school player with local ties selected in the 2010 MLB draft on Wednesday when the New York Mets used their 50th round pick (1,502nd overall) to select the Tigers senior catcher.
Eveld hit .384 with seven doubles, two home runs and 25 RBIs this season for Jesuit, which finished as the Class 4A state runner-up.
Eveld had no future plans set in baseball entering the draft. He does, however, have a preferred walk-on spot to join the USF football team. He was Jesuit’s starting quarterback each of the last two seasons.
University of Tampa left-hander John Weidenbauer was the last local player selected in the draft, going to the Boston Red Sox one pick before the New York Yankees made James Rice “Mr. Irrelevant” by spending the draft’s final pick to select the Western Kentucky catcher.
