Brooks-DeBartolo outfielder Kelvin Mention has started his professional baseball career.
The recent graduate was able to agree to terms with the Minnesota Twins before the deadline passed for MLB clubs to sign their draft picks, Phoenix coach Donnie Oliver said Monday morning, and has begun playing for Minnesota’s Gulf Coast League affiliate in Fort Myers. Mention was a 36th round selection.
Mention was one of only two high school seniors from Hillsborough County selected in June’s amateur draft able to agree to terms with their respective big-league club. Mention’s high school teammate, infielder Jadamion Williams, was the other. Williams was a 10th round pick by the Twins who signed earlier this summer and also is playing for the Gulf Coast League Twins.
Mention his .407 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 14 RBIs and 27 runs scored in his final prep season at Brooks-DeBartolo.
