Lee Meitzler will replace Mike Heldt as Alonso’s football coach.
The school announced the news in a release on Friday. Meitzler, who teaches math at the school and is an original staff member, fills the spot vacated by Heldt, who resigned last week.
“Lee is a superb coach and outstanding role model for young people,” Alonso athletic director Kent Glover said. “Coach Meitzler will set the tone needed, for this program to move forward. He’s a man of high character, honor and integrity and he’s well respected in the coaching fraternity. And because of that, he has the ability to bring in topnotch assistant coaches. He’s a perfect fit for Alonso High School.”
Meitzler coaching experience includes stints as an assistant coach at Hillsborough and Jefferson, where he was the Dragons defensive coordinator until a couple of years ago when he left to coach his sons in the Tampa Bay Youth Football League.
