Former Plant High baseball player Ryan McCurdy has signed a minor league free-agent deal with the Houston Astros.
McCurdy recently completed his collegiate career at Duke, where he started 197 career games at four different positions.
A second baseman in high school, McCurdy started there as a freshman with the Blue Devils before shifting to third base in his sophomore and junior seasons. As a senior, McCurdy switched to catcher, and despite never playing the position before, was error-free in 46 games behind the plate.
McCurdy hit .280 as a senior with a .407 on-base percentage. He also left Duke as the all-time leader in being hit by a pitch (69 times in his career).
McCurdy will begin his pro career with the Astros’ minor league affiliate in the rookie-level Appalachian League.
