Mayor to recognize USF; SunTrust Center will be Green and Gold

Mayor Pam Iorio has declared Friday “Green and Gold Day” in the city of Tampa.

The mayor, USF AD Doug Woolard and a herd of fans will be on hand to hoist a banner on the side of the Tampa Municipal Office Building at 10 a.m. Friday in support of the Bulls for Friday night’s game with No. 5 West Virginia.

The mayor is encouraging all fans to show their Bull pride by wearing USF gear or school colors on Friday.

Also Wednesday, officials with the SunTrust Financial Center, the downtown Tampa landmark, said it will glow green and gold Friday in honor of the Bulls.

Stiles Property Management began managing SunTrust Financial Center last week for the building’s new owners, a joint venture of Macquarie Office Trust and Stiles Capital Partners. Learning that Bulls fans hoped the building could be illuminated in team colors, Stiles took action to accelerate its planned electrical repairs and make the special lighting effects happen.

Green and gold lighting gel lenses are being overnighted from New York, and electrical work is underway to assure the ziggurat (or pyramid design) at the top of the building will be resplendent in Bulls colors in time for the game.

“We’re proud to light up the skyline to help celebrate the Bulls’ success,” Stiles Corporation President Doug Eagon said. “This is a great opportunity for Stiles to join the community in showcasing Tampa before a national audience.”

USF has a THIRD tier designation from U.S.News. Has had it for last two years. It was UCF who had 4th tier a year ago. USF should be striving for top tier and really believe that strong sports program (especially football) promotes over all quality.

Mayor Pam is a USF grad and I believe her father was a professor there. Brett, I think she is the first USF alum to be the mayor of Tampa.

Hey Brad,
Do you think you can get your organization to try to get ESPN and others to refer to the school as USF and not ‘South Florida’?  The school started branding themselves that way a few years ago (when they altered the logo) but it looks like they’ve eased off the gas pedal lately.
USF is how everyone refers to it, or did when I went there, and it sounds so much better that way.

I am very proud of a group of people at TheBullsPen.com that put on an “email and phone stampede” on the building’s owners, management and main tenant as well as the city to see what could be done to make the downtown area look more BULL-like for the usual pre-game or in-game video of the home team’s city.  I am the founder of the board, but that is not why I write this.  It is because we all need to realize as fans that we can not only get behind an effort, but initiate one ourselves and see it through.  With this a defining game and season for the Bulls program, we should all be more active and less reliant on others to do something whether it’s the city, a corporation, ESPN, the print or even USF.  Get involved and Go Bulls!

Its about time the city gets into full support mode. Frankly even USF administration has been dancing around football with only tacit support

It is time for USF to shed the commuter school label (Which is why USF has a 4th tier ranking in US News and World Reports annual “Best Colleges”)

Everyone loves a winner, but USF needs more support from the city of Tampa and the school administration (Whos policy up to now has kinda been… laxidasical

From another New Jersey based fan, I will be wearing my green and gold as well.  I was there at the first game 10 years ago and cannot wait to watch this one.

Go Bulls!!!!

I am wearing Green and Gold all week in honor of my alma mater, all the way up here in Weehawken, NJ!!!  I’m proud to say I’m one of the students to have run the first football kicked off at the first USF football game.  I’ve been in love with this team since.

It’s about time that the community as a whole get behind this team.  What they have accomplished in their existence is incredible.  Lets build off of momentum generated by this game and continue to fill out the stadium.  GO BULLS!!!
