Former Middleton High slugger Jamie Mallard has signed with the Los Angeles Angels, who selected him in the 18th round of the 2009 MLB first-year player draft earlier this month.
Mallard was assigned to the Angels’ rookie league affiliate in the Arizona League and made his pro debut Saturday.
Mallard was a 17th round draft choice by the Angels out of Middleton in 2008. However, he wasn’t able to come to terms and spent this past season at Hillsborough Community College. Mallard had a solid season for the Hawks in 2009, hitting a team-best .449 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 58 RBIs to earn NJCAA honorable mention All-American honors.
Also recently signing with the Angels was former University of Tampa standout Jose Jimenez. Jimenez also was assigned to the Arizona League.
