Make us an offer we can’t refuse

What if the Big East could add another school - a football-member only - that would be willing to join the league with the following conditions:

* Play a conference football schedule with zero compensation from the Big East so current members don’t have to give up any of their share of revenue.

* Be responsible for negotiating a television contract for home games until the league wants the school to be a part of its package.

* Not expect any of the league’s BCS revenue until earning a BCS bid of its own representing the conference.

* Come in as a football member only. Other sports would play in another league in order to not interfere with the league’s current 16-member setup for all other sports.

According to Desmond Conner, of the Hartford Courant, that’s exactly what East Carolina would be willing to do to become a member of the Big East Conference in football only. ECU AD Terry Holland and football coach Skip Holtz did not comment, but Conner’s information comes from “insiders with knowledge of East Carolina’s position.”

While a few Big East coaches, most notably UConn’s Randy Edsall, want a ninth football member for scheduling purposes, Big East commish Mike Tranghese is adamant about not adding a ninth football member. “I have told anybody and everybody it’s not happening. Don’t bother me.”

Heck, if East Carolina is willing to jump sell its soul to join the league as a football only member, the Big East should just post a ninth-member football vacancy on E-bay. See which Conference USA or Mid-American school would make the best offer.

Memphis could guarantee Elvis appearances at all their Big East road games plus all-you-can-eat Rendezous BBQ at every Memphis home game; UCF would have a deal with Disney World each Friday before its home games to allow the visiting teams and their fans inside for free and, best of all, an endless supply of Mickey Mouse ice cream bars; Tulane could offer holding Mardi Gras every weekend for visiting Big East teams and allowing Big East fans to play at Harrah’s. Overhead at blackjack table: “But sir, you’re from the Big East. Here at Harrah’s face cards are jokers, then can count for anything.” And Marshall could offer – well, I guess, Marshall doesn’t have anything to offer, but you get the point.

I say Tranghese have a heart, take a bribe. Let the Big East add a ninth football member school. Let the bidding begin!

David, Sorry about that. It’s corrected. Don’t know where I got Steve Sloan from.

What’s this about Houston?

Why not add Boise State? Or, Fresno State? Or, Hawaii?

Why would the Big East go to Texas for a team?

Who is ECU’s AD???? Come on, Brett....if you’re going to be a wise-acre, at least get the players’ names right.....

Please, ANYONE but UCF.  Do you really want their fans trashing RayJay every other year?  How about the warm hospitality of their fans that we saw at the Citrus Bowl?  I’d be willing to bet that the same drunken idiots are ten times worse at their own Dull Shack Frying Pan Stadium.  Thanks, but I think I’ll skip Disney.

Two Florida teams in the Big East is one too many.  A presence in North Carolina would be the best match for us.  Memphis would be a better second choice.  It would really transform the basketball to a powerhouse.

Of course, I’d really love to get Notre Dame, but we all know that won’t happen.

Bring in ECU and hope that Notre dame has another TERRIBLE year so that they do not have any bargaining power when their TV contract with NBC runs out. Then, they will want to join the league. That would give us 10 teams. Plus, ND won’t mess up anything in any other sports since they are already a Big East member. I do like the University of Houston idea though if they would commit to the same things as ECU. Much rather have UH than ECU all things equal.

Big East should drop Marquette and DePaul.  They aren’t worth it.  They are not East, not even remotely and they don’t play football.

Get Villanova to move up to BCS level and add East Carolina.  They could play 8 games a year skipping one.  Heck maybe they could talk UMASS in joining or get Boston College to switch back.

You know, I seem to remember East Carolina selling its soul to get full membership in Conference USA, way back in 2000. What’s the matter, ECU? That not working out?

How about the University of Houston?  Houston is major televsion market and large metropolitan area in football crazy state, sounds like Tampa.
