ST. PETERSBURG Ben Zobrist isn’t in the lineup for the second-straight game and could miss this weekend series against the Yankees with lower back stiffness that surfaced during Wednesday night’s win against the Tigers.
“They said it’s probably going to be a couple of days at least, so, for me, I’m hoping to be back by the Minnesota series,” Zobrist said before tonight’s game. “I don’t know if I’ll be ready to go for any of these games here. They told me they think it’s probably too inflamed to be back in two days or whatever.”
As for a trip to the disabled list, manager Joe Maddon said it hasn’t gotten to that point yet.
“He feels a lot better today than he did yesterday, so all the work they’ve been doing is paying off a bit, and we’ll see. I really don’t know,” Maddon said. “I’m hoping obviously not. I’d say … by Sunday we should know exactly where we’re at, have a better idea.”
Zobrist injured his back during his second at-bat Wednesday.
“It was that one swing and I think I had been doing too much hard hacks in the cage,” he said. “Right after I did that is when I felt it running down the line. It wasn’t bad like I need to come out, but I went out to the outfield and it felt uncomfortable out there, too. I didn’t want to test it, and it’s a good thing I didn’t because it might have gotten worse.”
Zobrist hopes to avoid the disabled list. The feeling is that sacrificing a few games now will allow his back time to heal so it doesn’t become a factor the rest of the season.
“Exactly,” he said. “That’s what we’re thinking.”
