ST. PETERSBURG David Price will pitch at Yankee Stadium next week, and he’ll face CC Sabathia, too.
The Rays made sure of that when they juggled the rotation, flipping Price and Jeff Niemann’s starts this weekend against the Angels so Price starts Saturday. This means he will start Thursday during the finale of the four-game series at Yankee Stadium.
“With David, it’s to give David another opportunity (against the Yankees),” Maddon said. “We’ve been kind of taking care of him and we feel pretty good where he’s at, innings and pitches, right now. It just seemed like the prudent thing to do. We normally don’t do those things. But it’s not like we’re not flexible. We’re going to try what we think is the right thing to do at a particular moment.”
The way the rotation had been set up, Price would have pitched Sunday and missed the four-game series with the Yankees, which begins Monday.
“It just didn’t seem like the right thing to do,” Maddon said about not having Price available for the Yankees.
Price, who knew about the switch for a couple of days, said he likes the move.
“Absolutely. I get to face New York again, so that’s fun,” he said. “I’ll have another go around in New York. My last one wasn’t so hot.”
When asked if he would be disappointed if he missed the Yankees next week, Price said, “You’re never really disappointed if you miss the Yankees. It’s fun to throw against them, but if you didn’t have to face the Yankees all year you probably wouldn’t be too sad about it.”
Maddon said the move was all about having Price face the Yankees than providing an extra day between starts for Niemann, who has struggled since coming off the DL.
It also sets up the rotation so Price will pitch the final day in Kansas City if that game has playoff implications.
