FORT MYERS Count Joe Maddon among those rooting for Cornell in the NCAA tournament.
Maddon said he almost attended the Ivy League school to study hotel and restaurant management.
“I was recruited by Cornell, could have gone there if I had been more patient,” he said. “With a little more guidance it was possible. I might be running a hotel in the Caribbean right now. So, go Big Red.”
Maddon said he was on Cornell’s waiting list when he accepted a scholarship offer from Lafayette College.
“If I had a do-over, and I loved my Lafayette experience, absolutely, I would have waited a little longer to consider the whole thing,” Maddon said.
Maddon attended Lafayette for three years before he signed with the Angels. Already a member of the school’s hall of fame, Maddon will receive an honorary degree Sept. 2.
“I’m on the 35-year plan,” Maddon said.
When asked if it was an honorary doctorate, would he prefer to be called, “Dr. Maddon,” Maddon replied, “I would. It’s kind of like ‘Sir’ with the British. I would definitely be into the Doctor.”
Maddon was already referred to as “Dr. Joe,” by catcher Dioner Navarro since Maddon correctly identified Navarro’s leg injury Saturday as a nerve injury and not a fracture or torn ligament.
“I was right on with my on-field analysis of the injury,” Dr. Joe said.
