Maddon bats Upton first, rests Crawford

ST. PETERSBURG - Manager Joe Maddon’s lineup for tonight’s series opener at the Trop against the Blue Jays has B.J. Upton batting leadoff and Carl Crawford resting his legs.

Upton, who is batting .333 since being held out of the starting lineup for two games May 26-27, comes off a 3-for-4 perforamnce at the plate in Sunday’s 9-5 win at Texas.

Maddon said he wanted to give Crawford two consecutive days off (Monday was an off-day), and with the Blue Jays throwing lefty Brian Tallet tonight, this game represented a good opportunity. Gabe Kapler is in left field and Ben Zobrist in right.

Shortstop Jason Bartlett (hamstring) worked out before the game - hitting, fielding and running - and said he felt much better and thinks he’ll be ready to return next Tuesday when he’s eligible to come off the 15-day DL. Maddon said he was reserving judgment until talking to trainer Ron Porterfield and Bartlett.
