Look Out For NY Super Bowl Bid

FORT LAUDERDALE—The notion of a Super Bowl played in an open-air stadium in the northeast appears ludicrous at first glance.

But don’t be too quick to dismiss it.

The Tampa Bay area is bidding for the next available Super Bowl and Bay area officials are understandably wary of their rival suitors from New York and New Jersey who are preparing to lobby NFL owners for the 2014 game.

The Giants and Jets will play in a new 82,500-seat stadium this fall and Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about his level of support for a potential first Super Bowl played in the northeast.

“This was something that was brought to our Super Bowl advisory committee because for the New York bid to move forward, they had to make an exception to our weather issue,’’ Goodell said Friday. “I sat in on that conversation and participated with them and I think there are real benefits to the league considering this as an option.’‘

Although a snowstorm is blanketing the northeast this weekend, Goodell apparently doesn’t view New York’s capricious February weather as a major obstacle.

“I think the idea of playing in the elements is central to the way the game of football is played,’’ he said. “I think being able to do that and celebrate the game of football in the No. 1 market could have tremendous benefits to the league going forward. It will be an interesting vote, but I will stand on the sidelines and watch.’‘

Besides Tampa Bay and New York, the other regions bidding for the 2014 game are Arizona and South Florida.

Even if Goodell tries to work the back channels and talk up the benefits of a New York Super Bowl, the ultimate power rests with the owners. And when it comes to casting their ballots, owners may think more about 75-degree sunshine, gentle breezes and resort golf rather than heeding their commissioner by tossing the Big Apple a one-time bone.
