Longoria on the way

Evan Longoria’s major-league debut may only be a day or two away. The Rays’ prized prospect was not in Durham’s lineup for the Bulls’ home opener tonight and Durham’s radio broadcast reported he is on his way to the majors.

Updating: A person familiar with the situation confirmed to the Tribune that Longoria has been called up. The Rays haven’t made it official and probably won’t announce anything until after the game, at the earliest.

Manager Joe Maddon and executive vice president Andrew Friedman acknowledged before the game today that Longoria might be called up to replace Willy Aybar if the Rays place their third baseman on the disabled list with a hamstring problem. The Rays were awaiting the results of an MRI exam on Aybar’s leg before determining whether to make a move.

The only other in-house option to replace Aybar would be Joel Guzman, but he is starting for the Bulls tonight. If he was headed to Tampa Bay, the organization wouldn’t risk injury by playing him tonight.

Evan Almighty has arrived. I have a feeling he’ll never see Durham again.

Finally some good news, i am at the game and just announced it to much the pleasure of all the fans around me. We finally get to see some of those prospects we have been waiting to see for the past couple years. Now everyone needs to get healthy ( mostly Kazmir, Garza, and Floyd ), and we can see some winning! And hopefully Longoria plays so well the Rays would look crazy to replace him back with Aybar.

Awesome news!  I’m watching the game and the announcers don’t have a clue or at least haven’t reported anything yet.  Great scoop for the blogger!

Send him up, he is the future no reason to hold him back. Esp, for Aybar who is a solid utility player but not a stud with immeasurable upside.
