TAMPA - Plant and Tampa Prep each won a pair of titles at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association State Championships at the Bypass Canal on Sunday at the Bypass Canal, and Hillsborough also brought home a title.
The Panthers finished second overall in the scholastic team competition as its girls 3rd varsity 8 and junior varsity 8 both won titles, and its girls varsity 8 finished second.
The 3rd varsity 8 won both the scholastic and overall title, as the crew of Shirley Vogler, Ajejandra Alemany, Alex Morrisson, Cecilia Valeri, Alexis Davis, Raelyn Loiselle, Taylor Athan, Allison Carter and cox Natalie Norman won in a time of 5 minutes, 28.6 seconds. Hillsborough’s crew of Marley Jackman, Nina Joung, Claire Shimberg, Sarah Scriben, Tess Labossiere, Holly Wong, Rachel Northcutt, Alexa Kuhnlein and cox Amber O’Conner finished second in a time of 5:38.1.
Plant’s junior varsity 8 followed that in its final, as it completed the course in a time of 5:17.0 to win the scholastic title. The Panthers crew of Allie Clark, Garrison Hodges, Lizzi Salem, Christiane Baggane, Stephanie Anderson, Julia Parker, Charlotte Temple, Kelsey Kiszla and cox Kristen Brownleg missed out on an overall state title by 0.6 seconds, as they were held off by the Orlando Area Rowing Society at the line.
Plant’s varsity 8 finished fourth overall in its final, second in the scholastic competition, and coach Sky Elliot was pleased the crew of Molly Hamrick, Sarah Smythe, Elizabeth Murray, Luisa Isbell, Taylor Shimberg, Leslie Hall, Parker Hodges, Ashley Bennett and cox Aubrey Larson were able to compete with the fastest boats in the state. Plant finished only four seconds behind state champion Winter Park.
“We did a great job of returning to the final for two years in a row,” Elliot said. “Our goal is always to make the final in every event, and we were able to do that in all the 8s this year, and in the varsity 8 we were able to come in the top 4 and be right next to the three fastest teams in the state.”
Tampa Prep’s titles also came in the girls divisions, in the lightweight 4 and the varsity 4. The lightweight 4 won in a time of of 5:56.4, and finished third overall behind Space Coast. The crew of Kiffy Balchon, Katie Dorsey, Rachel Krausman, Bre Beirl and cox Allison Martin also set a new school record in the event.
The varsity 4 of Kate Biladeau, Colyer Sigery, Jess Mine, Lydia Sunderland and cox Megan Kelly also won a scholastic title after finishing second to Gainesville Area Rowing in a time of 5:41.2. Coach Emily Brown said she was delighted with the way the crew had developed over the course of the season, and thought the addition of Kelly as the boat’s cox made a significant different to the team.
Biladeau agreed with her coach.
“Megan Kelly is an incredible coxswain,” Biladeau said. “There aren’t even words. She was really the one that pushed us to believe we could attain the impossible.”
Hillsborough’s title came thanks to Katie Burke, who held off the Academy of the Holy Names’ Shannon Hoffman to win the girls single sculls title in a time of 6:17.5. Burke, who had been edged out by Hoffman by 0.3 seconds at the Tampa City Championships on April 5, wanted to get a fast start so she could react to any attacks her opponents made late.
“My goal from the beginning was to start out in front,” Burke said. “I race the other two, so I know they’re fast girls, and at City’s Shannon from Academy beat me by three-tenths, so I was definitely looking in the beginning to start off ahead of her. I was trying to keep my lead the whole time, and whenever I could see they were trying to bring it up, I tried bringing it up.”
Burke said she thought the title would give a boost to the Terriers program, which has seen growth in the past season with youngers rowers joining the team.
“I’ve never medaled at states, so this is really cool,” Burke said. “Not oly for me, but obviously this is Hillsborough’s name so it’s really cool that Hillsborough won a state championship and I think it’s awesome for the team. I think it’s going to help motivate people.”
