Local boxers Ricky Tomlinson, Steve Cross win Golden Gloves titles

Strawberry Crest freshman Ricky Tomlinson Jr. collected a Junior Golden Gloves title in the 119-pound weight class of the 15/16-year-old division this past weekend.

Also, West Tampa Boxing member Steve Cross won the 108-pound weight class of the Open boxing division.

Tomlinson, since he won in the North portion of the Golden Gloves, qualifies to meet the South winner in the same weight class at a future date. He is also able to enter the National Golden Gloves competition July 22-24 in Mesquite, Nevada.

Cross can advance to the national tournament for open division champions, which will be held May 2-8 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

This weekend’s event took place in Port Charlotte at the Charlotte County Auditorium and Civic Center.
