The constant influx of players on the roster continues, as first reported by our friends over at Bolt Prospects last night after the Norfolk game at Albany. Not sure if that means Smaby will be at the morning skate, but I’m heading that way so I’ll let you know.
Here’s the release from the team:
The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled defenseman Matt Smaby from Norfolk of the American Hockey League, it was announced by Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton.
Smaby, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound native of Minneapolis, has skated in 19 games with Norfolk this season, recording two goals, three assists and 26 penalty minutes. Selected in the second round, 41st overall, by the Lightning at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Smaby made his NHL debut with the Lightning in 2007-08, skating in 14 games.
The 24-year-old has appeared in 143 career AHL games with Norfolk and Springfield, tallying five goals, 23 assists and 135 penalty minutes. Smaby played three seasons for the University of North Dakota (2003-04 through 2005-06), captaining teams that reached the NCAA Frozen Four in consecutive seasons

With all the cal-ups and sitting 2-3 players every night, several on IR, sure looks like they are ready again to pull the trigger on a trade. Just a guess but alot of players here now on payroll and small gates $ with economy and the way the team has played they need to shed payroll!
