The Lightning have determined the group of players who will travel to Dallas for Wednesday’s preseason opener against the Stars, which includes this year’s No. 2 overall pick, defenseman Victor Hedman.

The goaltenders will be Antero Niittymaki and Jaroslav Janus while the defense will consist of Matt Smaby, Mike Lundin, David Hale, Matt Lashoff, Kurtis Foster and Hedman, the 6-foot-6 Swedish sensation.

The forward line combinations will be: Jeff Halpern centering Drew Miller and Blair Jones; Zenon Konopka between Martins Karsums and Todd Fedoruk; Paul Szczechura centering Brandon Bochenski and Dana Tyrell while tryout invitee Brett McLean is between Steve Downie and Richard Panik.

Tampa Bay will play its only home preseason game on Friday against Atlanta, where many of the team’s top players, including goaltender Mike Smith, captain Vinny Lecavalier, Marty St. Louis and Steven Stamkos.

The remaining six preseason games will all take place on the road during a seven-day stretch that begins Monday in Regina, Saskatchewan, and concludes in Atlanta on Sunday, Sept. 27. Tampa Bay opens the regular season back in Atlanta on Oct. 3.

Erik - was going to send a mailbag question that’s been bugging me, but you answered it above.  My question was how can us local fans express our opinion about the players to suit up for the single (only) true home pre-season game.  They should consider suiting up our top players since this is our only chance to see them in our barn.  Last year we lost a home game when the season began overseas.  After hanging-on thru the last 2 dismal years, I was hoping they would at least suit up a team of players WE want to see and not the kids on the bubble between the AHL/OHL teams.  If someone asks, I think I speak for all other season ticket holders that we really want to see the Lighting play Friday and not the minor league squad.  Thanks!
