Lightning make three cuts before leaving for Prague

Before leaving New York for the airport, Tampa Bay has left three players behind.

Defenseman Matt Smaby was re-assigned to Norfolk.
Forwards Brandon Bochenski and Zenon Konopka were also re-assigned to Norfolk, but each must clear waivers first. The pair will be placed on waivers tomorrow and have until Saturday at noon eastern time to clear. If both of them clear, they will report to Norfolk on Monday.

Surprised about Smaby.  I wonder what the thinking behind that is.  Maybe there is something in the works to bring in someone else?

Noooo I was wanting them to keep Konopka! I’ll be surprised if he passes through waivers. Bochenski I could careless about. Melrose has really been impressed with Mihalik so I’m not surprised he was kept up for the time being.

I thought they were on 2 way deals? Why waivers if on 2 way deals?

Tampa will be seeing a lot of d-man Mathieu Schneider this season. Anaheim just traded him to Atlanta for defenseman Ken Klee and forwards Brad Larsen and Chad Painchaud.
Will be interesting to see how much they sign Selanne for.

Matt - just because someone is on a 2-way deal doesn’t mean they don’t have to clear waivers if they make over $100K in AHL they still have to clear waivers - each way.
