USF coach Jim Leavitt was shocked like the rest of the college football world when he first heard the news of Florida coach Urban Meyer’s resignation Saturday night.
Leavitt has known Meyer since his days as an assistant at Kansas State during the same time Meyer was an assistant at Colorado State. Meyer has also taken time out of his busy schedule in recent years to attend Leavitt’s charity events for Tampa Bay-area kids.
In their only head-to-head meeting, USF defeated Meyer’s Bowling Green team in 2002 at Raymond James Stadium. They were scheduled to meet again next season when the Bulls travel to Gainesville for their first game against the Gators.
However, Meyer won’t be manning the Florida sidelines like he has the past five seasons.
“Urban and I are awfully good friends,’’ Leavitt said. “My prayers go out to him and his family. I’m just as supportive as I can be. I want the best things for him.
“He’s just been a tremendous coach and had such an impact on young men’s lives. I know his family means so much to him, so if he is making this decision, I know it’s for the right reasons.’’

Who would have guessed that both Florida AND Florida State would lose their coaches in the same year? This should help USF recruiting for the next few years!

Dan, I know that you’re a big supporter of Leavitt, but the one thing that would help recruiting more than anything would be USF winning a Thursday night nationally televised game and beating either Cincy or Rutgers once in a while. Sadly, the one factor that’s constant at USF on Thursdays and against Cincy or Rutgers is Leavitt. So, to accomplish those aforementioned goals, Leavitt and staff would have to be gone in my opinion. Let’s look at the MAC or Mnt West and bring in a creative and successful coach that’s not a nut job.

I like our program and our coach. He has done things faster than any other program in NCAA history, but folks like you always find time to be negative. I believe that since we’ve joined the Big East we have beaten every team in it at least once, and while I would like to dominate it, I think that’s a bit premature for a 13 year old program that only got decent facilities a few years ago. I think Leavitt needs more money to improve his assistant coaching positions, because they can still triple their money by leaving USF. We have no budget to recruit out of state. His bosses know that. Some fans don’t seem to.

Dan, I’ll give you the USF doesn’t spend much on their assistants argument - which is probably one of the main reasons USF has not improved like Cincinnati or others since joining the BE. You are correct that USF has beaten every BE team at least once since joining the BE in ‘05 when they beat both Cincy and Rutgers, but they’ve not beaten those two teams since. Another reason for my lack of faith in Leavitt is their poor performance in BE away games. For example, they’ve never beaten Louisville or UCONN in an away game since joining the BE, but at least they’re 5-0 against Syracuse.

Thanks. Now, here’s the part that everybody leaves out: I think if Leavitt posts 2-3 losing seasons in a row, he’s gone. I hate that every year we beat the cupcakes and then can’t pull .500 in our conference, but as a marketing ploy, it’s brilliant. How the heck else would ESPN and national rankings put us in the top 25 every year if we weren’t doing that cr@p. Recruits outside of Florida have never heard of us without doing that. It works. We don’t tank at midseason, we just start to play our conference and can’t do well against them. They’ve seen our stuff before. That is very frustrating, but when I look into that I see the other things I mentioned and I just have to be patient. Soon wins like we had against Auburn will be common

Dan, I hope you’re right and I applaud your loyalty, but unfortunately, I’m not as confident as you w/r/t any real improvement by Bulls in next couple of years with Leavitt. I look at how well Louisville did early on and how well Cincinnati has developed since both came into BE with USF, and I’m just not impressed with where Bulls are currently. Since we have to agree to disagree on this one, let’s see how USF does against N. Illinois and next season. So, what would be your assessment if N. Illinois beat USF in Intl Bowl and Bulls go 6-6 or 7-5 next season? Does that change anything for you?

Cincy has been around 125+ years and has a former US president as an alumni. Louisville has been playing football for decades and decades and decades and has TONS of alumni and money. both are considered premier schools in their states. They just don’t compare with USF because they can almost send out an email and raise $100 million. Perspective. Hate to be a broken record, but it’s all a matter of perspective. USF should have paid its dues: 20 years in CUSA before moving up. Some fans punish them for moving up and not being fully ready, but USF had to take the opportunity

I have to side with Dan A. on this one. CJL is good for the program and just needs time to win the Big East and become a perennial top-15 team. But Meyer is not really leaving UF.
