Leavitt will talk to Daniels about hoops career after bowl game

Here is a short notebook to run in Sunday’s edition of The Tampa Tribune:

TAMPA – A year ago as USF prepared to face Memphis in the inaugural St. Petersburg Bowl, Bulls QB B.J. Daniels had already joined the basketball team.
Daniels says he wants to join USF basketball coach Stan Heath’s team again, but his role on the football team is much more prominent, creating questions whether Daniels should focus solely on football or still attempt to be a two-sport athlete. Daniels started nine games this season after Matt Grothe’s season-ending knee injury and is busy preparing for USF’s appearance in the International Bowl on Jan. 2.
USF coach Jim Leavitt said Saturday that he has not talked to Daniels about his plans to continue playing basketball and that he won’t until after the Bulls face Northern Illinois.
“I’m not worried about that right now,’’ Leavitt said. “He’s preparing to play in the bowl game and that’s what I’m focused on. I’ll wait until Jan. 3 or Jan. 4 to start thinking about that.’’

ANOTHER GO FOR MO? Senior RB Mo Plancher graduated Saturday with a degree in social sciences, but his football career at USF might not be over. After redshirting in 2005, Plancher suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first game of 2006 and was granted a medical hardship according to his bio on the USF website.
Plancher has rushed for 826 yards and 11 touchdowns over the past three seasons, including 461 yards in 2009, best among USF’s running backs.
USF is exploring getting Plancher a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA.
“We’re not sure,’’ Leavitt said. “That one is kind of up in the air.’’

BULL BITS: Daniels was named Offensive MVP and senior LB Kion Wilson the Defensive MVP at Friday night’s annual football awards banquet dinner … USF will practice Sunday afternoon at 2 before the coaches hit the road to recruit. The Bulls are off Monday and Tuesday and will return to practice Wednesday.

I know BJ looks up to ex-FSU great Charlie Ward and that he would like ot play both sports…..in my opinion I think BJ should concentrate one fball for now.

I don’t know that Ward was made to start as a red-shirt for FSU so he had more years to get the system down….BJ does not have that luxury.

Either way I wish him the best.

Let him play both sports… He’s not going to end up in the NFL or NBA due to his size, and he specifically came here to play both sports (remember that was the reason we were able to sign him). I’m sure when Leavitt signed him, he expected the kid would eventually pan out and start… does that mean Leavitt was going to go back on his word then? Also, Jim played two sports in college… if anything, BJ can cite that as an example as why he should be able to play both sports. When it comes down to it… BJ is still a young man… hopefully he can enjoy the opportunity to play two sports in college, because when it is all said and done, he too will be a rec league legend after graduation.

I don’t like it, but a deals a deal. Let him play both and then start recruiting his qb replacement asap with extreme urgency. We have lost almost every starting qb to injury. I also think playing both sports may be a good way to stay conditioned, but I don’t know.

P. S. , spent the weekend in Ohio near Cincy and BOY are they mad. Putting on a good face, but that team and that area is wounded, hurt, resentful… You name it. It will be an ugly bowl loss, and a lot of recruits are re-thinking UC football post-Brian Kelly (who will need an aired guard to cash his last paycheck). Not a happy place, especially after the bengals loss!

Dan, hope you had a good trip…If I’m a Bearcats fan, I’d probably be a little ticked too, but I can’t blame Kelly or any of these other coaches who bolt for the money of a top-flight school like Notre Dame. But you do feel bad for the way these high-profile moves usually go down because of the players..however, I’ll bet right now Kelly never has an undefeated season as Notre Dame like he did in Cincy.

Kelly will be successful at ND, and he will get them into a National Championship race within 5 years. He’s that good, and so is ND when they try to be.

A fair percentage of getting into the National Championship talk is votes, which you get from being in the media, which you can get from being a good salesman/coach - and that, he is.
