In his old job, former University of South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt wore USF athletic apparel at work nearly every day.
Leavitt spent part of Sunday morning driving around town in his SUV giving away a lot of his worn USF gear to strangers.
“There were some homeless people I gave stuff to,’’ Leavitt said when reached on his cell phone Sunday afternoon.
Leavitt didn’t provide specific details about what he handed out, but he said Sunday wasn’t the first time he has driven around town passing out USF clothing to people on the street.
“That’s not something new,’’ Leavitt said. “I’ve done that kind of thing before; who else would want to wear my old stuff?’’
Leavitt was fired Jan. 8 by USF for an incident with walk-on running back Joel Miller at halftime of the Nov. 21 game against Louisville that a university investigation concluded was a “serious violation’’ of school policy.

Quite charitable on Jim’s part…

I was wondering, is somebody following Leavitt around watching this stuff? How does information like this get obtained?
Meanwhile, Terry, what were your thoughts on the whole leavitt “incident”?

Dan, I was wondering the same thing.
I hope someone else gives him a chance in a year or two and I hope he does great with that program. FIU maybe?

No, I’m not stalking Leavitt around town
You guys bring up a good question. We got a tip that someone saw Leavitt handing out stuff out of his SUV, and I called to confirm. No matter what you think of Leavitt as a coach or person, it’s always hard to see someone crash this hard. I’m sure it’s a tough time in his life. He’ll coach again, but my guess is as a def. coordinator or NFL defensive asst. one day.

My take Dan… The report is pretty damning. The meeting at the church, over the top. No one is suing McMurphy, so that pretty much sums up whether or not the incident happened in my opinion. If I had $7 million duckets/beaver pellets on the line, I would be suing the reporter for defamation first and foremost.
Looking forward to a fresh start honestly… We’re going to find out how much of a coach Skip is when we head to Gainesville on 9/11/2010. That game means more to the alum and student than any game in our history. We need to show up, plain and simple.

Terry, I was an “innocent until proven guilty” guy about this until I read the report - the whole report. At that point, I said, well, he did it, and then he screwed up by contacting the player/interfering with the investigation. That’s terminable stuff. Add to it the story of the church meeting, and you have an even bigger attempt to interfere. So, he did it to himself at that point. If he hit the kid, which I now think he did, he’s gone; and for interfering with the investigation, which he did, he’s gone.
So I’m ready for the new chapter. And I agree, the UF game is the biggest in school hostory.
