Leavitt: Live on tour

Apparently University of South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt will not spend his entire summer watching film in his office.

Leavitt will speak about the upcoming season on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Congregation Beth Am, 2030 W. Fletcher Avenue. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at http://usffootballcoach.eventbrite.com Tickets also can be purchased at the door for $15 (cash only) Tuesday after 7:15 p.m.

Proceeds will help support youth programs and religious school activities for the community and Congregation Beth Am.

Leavitt also will attend the third annual Pinellas County preseason tailgate celebration on July 20 from 2-6 p.m. at Capogna’s Dugout, 1653 Gulf to Bay Blvd. in Clearwater.

Selvie on Nagurski list: It won’t come as a big surprise when USF DE George Selvie is named to the Bronko Nagurski watch list when it’s announced later today. Last year, Selvie was among five finalists for the award, given to college football’s best defensive player. Selvie is the only USF player on the watch list.

Top 20 Bulls: Athlon’s is releasing its preseason Top 25 one day at a time and last week USF came in at No. 20, two spots ahead of No. 22 Rutgers. Also, ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach revised his preseason Top 25 – and still no love for the Bulls. The only Big East teams ranked: No. 9 West Virginia and No. 19 Pitt. Kansas, which visits USF in week three, is ranked No. 17.

Around the Big East: Former USF men’s basketball coach Robert McCullum was interested in assistant positions at Oklahoma State and Marquette, but neither panned out. … Former USF OL Thed Watson was among three dozen players participating in the New York Giants’ mini-camp, Newsday reported. This is the same format Amarri Jackson earned a free agent deal with the Bucs, but no word if Watson was able to do the same with the Giants. … Mitch Vingle, of the Charleston (WVa.) Gazette, spoke with Big East commish Mike Tranghese about his decision not to support the plus-one BCS model at the recent meetings in Hollywood, Fla. “Our view is we’re open to talking about anything,” Tranghese said. “But the plus-one idea is just a disguise for a playoff.” Tranghese added the plus-one “looked like a playoff, smelled like a playoff. We don’t think a playoff is in the best interest of college football.” Tranghese said later: “[A plus-one] wasn’t going to clean up anything,” he said. “It was only going to lead to a full-blown playoff. We’d go from four [teams] to eight to 10 to 20. You’d start [the playoff] during exam period and it would go into the second semester. Presidents will never go for that. You can’t just treat this like [Division] I-AA. You know the press demands from the media.’’ Let me get this straight, the media is now a reason there can’t be a plus-one format? … Movin on up: Louisville received approval from the state of Kentucky on plans for a $72 million expansion of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. The expansion is scheduled to be finished for the 2010 season and increases the stadium capacity to more than 60,000. Oh by the way, the Cards will be leaving historic Freedom Hall for a new downtown, $252 million basketball arena (capacity 22,000) that is expected to be completed in 2010. What no Freedom Hall in the Big East? Well, we’ll still have the Sun Dome.
