As players emerged from the locker room for the University of South Florida’s Tuesday morning practice, DE coach Kevin Patrick shouted encouragement. “Time for a good day,” Patrick said as the players filed by him on their way to their practice field.
However, USF’s second fall practice was anything but a good day, USF coach Jim Leavitt said after the two-hour workout.
“We were not very good today,” Leavitt said. “They were slow, on the ground too much. Complacent. We didn’t’ stay on task. We had some good individual work and fundamental work, but our team wasn’t very good.”
Among the individuals who performed well, Leavitt said were the defensive backs.
“The team period wasn’t very good and that’s most important,” Leavitt said. “We certainly wouldn’t have won a football game today, I can assure you.”
Bulls add commit: Gainesville OL Kendall Kelly verbally committed to USF Monday. He chose the Bulls over scholarship offers from Arkansas, Louisville, Middle Tennessee, Ohio and Charleston Southern.
“I’m very happy,” Kelly told the Gainesville Sun. “I liked the coaching staff and it is an added plus that they are an up-and-coming team that is right down the street. They said they were going to be very aggressive in recruiting me and they were very aggressive in recruiting me.”

Good to hear from you Tom… I’ll be in Mousetown for this year’s game as I’m taking ten days off to relax under the Florida sun. We’ll be doing some watch parties in the Phoenix metropolitan area as well in the future if you are back out here. We did one for the RU game last season that was attended pretty well (think we had nine people). If you see me in Mousetown or at the KU game, hit me up… I’ll have a beer or two I can send your way.

Hey Terry, long time no talk. I see you from time to time on here and at away games. We watched the USF at UCF game two years ago when I was in Phoenix. The lengths we will go to watch the Bulls...watching the game in the home of a UCF grad. Hope to see you at future games.

Terry, you’re right. You know Leavitt will have them jacked for Wednesday. Wonder if Allen Iverson could play for Leavitt: “Practice, you talking about practice?” Also, Terry check the post above - ran into some of your former teammates: Sipp, Black, Dixon and Davis. Ahhh, the good old days.

What these players don’t realize… and maybe it’s taken me awhile to appreciate this fact… a bad practice can linger into the season. When players loaf around or miss assignments causing plays to be repeated over and over and over again, it takes away from the overall preparation and focus of the team and that day’s practice. Usually, a bad practice happens the second week into fall practice when the players start to separate from first team to scout team. This is very early for any Leavitt team and would have me alarmed. I would expect the next practice for everyone to be firing on all cylinders.

Leavitt, the psychologist, strikes again.
After a 2 1/2 hour practice in the heat the night before, all the players jacked with emotion over the official start of their first season as a preseason nationally ranked team, is it any wonder they came with less juice Tuesday morning?
Of course not. But Leavitt uses it as a “teaching moment” and tries to get the team to understand the level of commitment necessary to win a BE championship.
A lttle “conditioning” (Leavitt’s term from his video today) so that next time the bell rings, his Bulls foam at the mouth.
You gotta love it.
