LB Wilson out for UConn

University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt said LB Kion Wilson will miss Saturday’s game at Connecticut with an ankle injury suffered in the second quarter of the Miami game.

“We’re not going to have him this game,” Leavitt said. “It doesn’t look good.”

Wilson hasn’t practiced this week, and if he’s out, freshman Sam Barrington will get his first career start.

Earlier this season, Wilson, who leads USF with 98 tackles, missed an entire week of practice but still played in that week’s game.

“And he had a great game,” Leavitt said.

In other injury news, SS Jerrell Young (ankle) was out of his protective boot, but Leavitt said his status is still unknown. NT Terrell McClain (neck) and Leslie Stirrups (elbow) have returned to practice and will be available Saturday.

MITCHELL READY: WR Carlton Mitchell, who leads the team with 30 catches for 563 yards and four touchdowns, has been practicing with no limitations this week and should be 100 percent against UConn.

“I know by this Saturday I’ll be ready,” Mitchell said. “I’ll be fine.”

Mitchell suffered a high ankle sprain against West Virginia on Oct. 30 and missed USF’s following two games. He returned last week against Miami, but had just one catch for 21 yards and admitted afterward his ankle wasn’t completely healed.

“There were a lot of things I was worried about, like stepping wrong,” Mitchell said. “I started out pretty good … but toward the middle I was hurting pretty bad.”

Mitchell, a junior from Gaither, is 19 yards from becoming USF’s all-time leader in receiving yards.

“Someone told me a couple of weeks ago, but I’m trying to not get too caught up in that,” he said. “But it’s very nice. It’s a blessing. I’m happy.”

Scott, speaking of being out due to injury, how is Grothe doing? I am wondering whether he may have any chance (at any level, any position) tp play professional football? Say he gets his knee right, what would be his path to pro ball, where might he play, and for what team? I know he used to talk to Doug Flutie a lot, is canada or arena ball in his future? What are your thoughts?

Dan,

Grothe said last week that he expect to start jogging in a pool any day now and that he hopes to be running in straight lines withing 4 to 6 weeks…he hopes to be near full-speed by USF’s pro day in march…

He did say that he wants to continue playing and doesn’t care where, so Canada or another minor-league professional league is the likely route for him to get that opportunity.

You can’t help but feel bad for the kid…hope he gets healthy and can meet his future goals.

Matt has a humble charm that is warm and friendly, and he could make a hell of a lot more money being a college ball commentator than a minor league player.  I dont think the minors or Canada is what Matt envisioned for his football future.  An NFL team would be really smart to bring him in despite the injury.  He has a unique spark I find unmatched in college ball, not to mention he’s fun as hell to watch play. What do you think, Scott, Dan?  Am I way off base here?

There was a lot of garbage talk about him BEFORE the injury, but I believe most of that was regarding his possibilities as a QB. I never heard Grothe say he wanted to ONLY be considered as a QB candidate in the NFL; I recall a quote saying he’d be the water boy if that’s what it took. Post-injury, I was curious as to what possibilities exist. Too small for a running back? Too small for QB? There’s a lot of ways to say no; are there any positions in any league that would say yes? As for commentator, I have no idea what that pays, but who know? If it’s a way to stay associated with the game. I never found him to be outstanding speech-wise (his Jim Rome interview was less than stellar), but he does have charm and personality.

Fingers crossed Grothe gets to play somewhere, even in the minors.  He’s a driven young man and I wouldn’t put it past him to claw his way into the NFL after spending a number of years in Canada or another league. Unfortunately, I don’t think an NFL team would take him as is but if he could develop a little attention in the “minor” leagues he might get a look.  I imagine that is on Grothe’s mind.

Best wishes to him on either path.  I’d be just as happy to hear him reporting college ball one day as playing third string for the Bengals. (Actually, I’d be much happier if he could get into announcing / commentary).  He would be a God send over ESPN’s anti-USF morons that currently announce our games.

joecole,

Considering his injury, Grothe will probably have a hard time getting a look from an NFL team any time soon. But he seems determined to at least continue his career and if he shows somebody something, all it takes is for one team to like something they see.

Having watched him from afar, I always enjoyed his style…he was a fun college quarterback to watch…too bad he got hurt before I took over the USF beat…I’d like to gotten to know the guy you and Dan talk about…

thanks for checking in
