Junior linebacker Rodney Williams, one of the top college recruits in the area and a starter at his position the past two seasons, has withdrawn from Spoto and transferred to Hillsborough, Terriers head coach Earl Garcia confirmed Thursday.
Last season at Spoto, the 6-foot-1, 225 pound fullback/middle linebacker averaged 11.6 tackles per game with three sacks. Seeing limited but key duty on offense, he rushed 37 times for 135 yards with one touchdown. He was later named to the Tribune’s All-Hillsborough County defensive second-team.
Spoto ended the 2009 season 7-3.
The hard-hitting linebacker has been Spoto’s top player the last two years, leading the Spartans to their first playoff appearance in 2008 with 105 tackles, six sacks and six rushing touchdowns. Williams was supposed to be Spoto’s top returner on a senior-dominanted Spoto team that consisted of receiver Tyrone Baker, running back/linebacker Danny Taylor and defensive back Nick Addison.
