Lakewood claims HCC volleyball invite

TAMPA Led by junior outside hitter and Florida commitment Berkely Wheley, Lakewood captured the 2010 Hillsborough Community College High School Invitational on Saturday.

Lakewood, Academy of the Holy Names and Bloomingdale each finished 3-1 overall and went 1-1 in the championship bracket, a best of three format., to force a three-way tie for first. Lakewood, which swept Bloomingdale and lost to Holy Names in four games, won the tie breaker based on overall game differential.

Wheley, who led Lakewood (7-3) with 25 kills against Holy Names, was named tournament MVP.

“It’s always a positive to come into Tampa, get out of your area, and try a few things,” Lakewood coach Sean O’Flannery said.

Lakewood Ranch won the silver bracket and Wiregrass Ranch won the bronze.

Jennifer Aprile and Chandler Cartwright were named to the all-tournament team for Holy Names, which won the tournament last year. Katie Fife and Sammi Klemp represented Bloomingdale on the all-tournament team.
