Bucs Report
Lack of TD in loss to Panthers creates near-record for Bucs

By IRA KAUFMAN

That frustrating afternoon in Charlotte last Sunday placed the Buccaneers in rare company for the modern era of the National Football League.

In their 16-6 setback to the Panthers, the Bucs became only the second NFL team since 1960 to roll up at least 469 yards and lose while failing to score a touchdown. Tampa Bay couldn’t overcome five interceptions thrown by rookie QB Josh Freeman in falling to 1-11.

Tampa Bay joined the 1986 San Francisco 49ers, who dropped a 14-6 decision at Washington while gaining 501 yards. Bill Walsh’s 49ers were undermined by four turnovers and 15 penalties as Joe Montana threw for 441 yards while attempting 60 passes against the Redskins.

Ironically, that San Francisco club finished the ’86 season 10-5-1 and won the NFC West by leading the league with a plus-20 turnover differential.

The 1994 Bengals gained 496 yards at Seattle and failed to score a TD, but Cincinnati downed the Seahawks 20-17 behind six field goals and a safety.
