The injured knee of Armwood quarterback Darryl Richardson’s will require a more detailed examination with a magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI), Hawks coach Sean Callahan said.
Making his first start for the Hawks, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Richardson injured his right knee early in Friday’s nationally-televised game in Nevada against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Armwood won the showdown 20-17 and Richardson was able to play the entire game. But the following morning, Richardson’s knee was swollen. He returned home Saturday night with the team but with the knee in an immobilizer, required a wheelchair as the Hawks left the airplane and headed back to Seffner by bus.
Callahan said doctors do not believe Richardson has suffered any ligament damage to the knee but the MRI is needed to ensure there isn’t a fracture to the patela (knee cap) or to the tibia plateau (top of the shin bone). Callahan said Richardson is still having difficulty bending the knee.
In the meantime, Richardson, a junior, seems very doubtful for Friday’s game at Brandon. His likely replacement is wide receiver Alvin Bailey, who has already been taking snaps in practice this month at quarterback.
