One of the young college assistants that most expect to become a head coach soon is Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.
Smart is a coach that I’ve heard mentioned by multiple people the past couple of days as one USF would be smart to talk to about replacing Jim Leavitt.
If Doug Woolard and Co. want to at least gauge Smart’s interest, they better hurry.
According to ESPN.com, Georgia coach Mark Richt has offered Smart a three-year deal worth more than $700,000 annually to join Georgia’s staff. Smart is a Georgia grad and coached there previously, so could be a difficult offer to pass up.

True, but quickly filling the post is not the same as filling the vacancy efficiently and cautiously. He may be a “hot” name but does he fit, does he want it and is he ready to be a HC.

Wow, so many ties to Georgia. However, he would make twice as much as a head coach here, so he’s certainly still a candidate. Interestingly, Alabama doesn’t have any recruits from FL this year last I checked. I wonder why that is.

From everyone I’ve spoken to, Smart is a future head coach, but like Allen points out, lots of ties to Georgia—he played there and has already coached there once.
As for Alabama not having any recruits from Florida, that’s interesting and something I was unaware of. Hard to imagine an SEC school not having at least one florida recruit in its class…last I checked Alabama had a pretty good team though

I wouldn’t be worried about his recruiting, for sure, but it is odd that Alabama doesn’t even need FL to win and recruit well. It’s not like it’s very far.
I think Smart is one of the best candidates we could have, along with Skip Holtz, the Houston guy, Herm Edwards, and the Bowdens (younger ones).

I think it’s bad timing for Smart. We need an established head coach that can go forward and not make administrative mistakes; a guy who knows how to be a head coach, talk to the media, not cause heartburn for the athletic director - trust me, that’s #1 on Genshaft’s list, a guy who won’t cause her any problems. If he can actually coach, that’s a plus.
For us fans, we need somebody to take the program to the next level, not to take themselves to the next level. Alabama’s ability rests largely with Saban and no one else.

If you read today’s story about how the boosters are following this thing and what they are hoping to see happen…...then the best choice, according to the quotes on the story, is Fulmer.
He is a proven consistent winner, a recrutier, able to work FL recruiting and would not take this job to go somewhere else, in my opinion he is too old for that.
He would also get a lot of folks excited. Hope he gets a good look.
